Dating app scam: Mumbai woman duped of ₹3.37 lakh by fake customs officer

Dating app scam: Mumbai woman duped of ₹3.37 lakh by fake customs officer

Tinder

A 43-year-old woman from Mumbai was allegedly scammed out of ₹3.37 lakh by a man she met on a dating app, according to police on Friday. The victim, an art director by profession, had connected with a man named 'Advait' on Tinder last month. They began chatting regularly, a police officer mentioned.

Fake customs official demands money

The man told her that he was living abroad but planned to visit Mumbai on September 16 to meet her. On that day, the woman got a call from someone claiming to be a customs official from Delhi, informing her that her friend, Advait, had been detained at the airport with a large sum of Euros.

The person posing as the customs official asked her to transfer ₹3.37 lakh via UPI to secure her friend's release, which she did. However, the caller later requested an additional ₹4.99 lakh to be deposited in a bank account.

Bank intervention prevents further fraud

Suspicious, she visited her bank to make the transfer, where an official inquired about the transaction and realised she might have fallen victim to cyber fraud. The bank staff warned her, preventing further loss. Following her complaint, Versova police registered a case of cheating against unknown individuals, and an investigation is underway.

In a similar case, a 33-year-old woman from Malad lost ₹2.45 lakh to a man she met on a dating app. The man, claiming to be a doctor from the UK, told her he was stuck at customs while visiting India. He assured her he would repay her once the issue was resolved.
