27 dead as flood fury strikes India's Andhra Pradesh, Telangana: Top points

At least 27 people were reported dead due to relentless torrential rainfall in the southern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for the second consecutive day on Sunday (Sept 1). Widespread flooding, waterlogging, and road and rail traffic disruption are affecting millions with emergency measures imposed across both states.

Andhra Pradesh, Telangana rains: Top developments

  1. Death toll: The heavy downpour has claimed at least 15 lives in Telangana and 12 in Andhra Pradesh, as rivers in both states swelled dangerously.

  2. Evacuations: Thousands of residents have been evacuated from flood-affected areas by national and state disaster response teams. These evacuees are now housed in relief camps as the states brace for further rainfall.

  1. Trains cancelled: Over 100 trains have been cancelled, with several others diverted due to waterlogged tracks across the South Central Railway network, which serves Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and other neighbouring states in the south of Vindhyas.

  2. Prime Minister’s assurance: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Sunday (Sept 1), and assured them of all possible assistance from the central government to tackle the crisis.

  3. Weather warnings: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several districts of Telangana, including Adilabad, Nizamabad, Rajanna Sircilla, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Kamareddy, and Mahabubnagar. The red alert iseffective starting Monday (Sept 2).

  4. Schools closed in Hyderabad: In Hyderabad,authorities have declared a holiday for schools on Monday (Sept 2) to ensure the safety of students.

  5. Government action: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy held an emergency review meeting and directed officials to stay vigilant and take quick action to provide relief in flood-hit areas. He urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.

  6. Vijayawada impact: Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh has been severely affected, with the Budameru rivulet overflowing at several points, flooding many parts of the city. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu visited Ajit Singh Nagar in Vijayawadafor the second time on Sunday (Sept 1) to take stock of the situation.

  7. Further Alerts: The IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall for several districts in Andhra Pradesh, including Srikakulam, Vijayanagaram, Parvatipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Kakinada, and Nandyala, on Monday.
