Lionel Messi made the headlines in Argentina's 6-0 thumping over Bolivia in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers matchon Tuesday (Oct 15). Inhis second international appearance since recovering from an injury sustained at the Copa America in July, Messi was on a roll as he scored a hat-trick to lead Argentina to a big win. Courtesy of his heroics, Messi also equalledarch-rival Cristiano Ronaldofor the most number of international hat-tricks. Both Ronaldo and Messi now haveas many as 10 hat-tricks, with Iran’s Ali Daei at 9.

Ronaldo-starrer Portugal, on the other hand, had a frustrating outing versus Scotland in the Nations League clash, which ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Talking about the clash, Argentina dominated it from the word go. Messi opened his side's account by finding the back of the net on the 19th minute. Before the break, Argentina was already 3-0 up withLautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez adding a goal each. In the second half, substitute Thiago Almanda scored in the 69th minute before Messi made it worse for Bolivia with two fine strikes before the end of the clash.

Bolivia goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra made a couple of fine saves to preventhosts Argentina from extending their lead, however, he still couldn't prevent his side's mauling at the hands of the current world champions.

Copa America winners Argentina are at the top of the standings, with 22 points, three ahead of Colombia. The 2026 WC will be held inthe United States, Mexico and Canada.
