<p>Zohran Mamdani has won the New York mayoral elections and will become first Indian-American of Muslim faith to be at the post. As he addressed New Yorkers after his historical win, he did not shy away from his Indian roots. From first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to Bollywood, Mamdani's speech encapsulated what his campaign showed for so long - he is in New York for immigrants and he is not the one to run away from his identity. Amid loud cheers as he finished his speech, Bollywood song <i>‘Dhoom Macchale</i>’ played in background!</p>

<p>Thanking the voters for the mandate, Mamdani said that New York will be the light in political darkness of the country. He directly addressed US President Donald Trump, took a swipe at now defeated Andrew Cuomo and then, came straight to the main point - his vision to make New York city “affordable and accessible.” It hit a different chord, not only for his supporters but for Democrats in general, whose speeches have for long been focussed on Trump and his highhandedness.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Quoting Nehru, Mamdani said, “Standing before you, I’m reminded of Jawaharlal Nehru’s words. A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance. Tonight, New York has done just that. This new era demands clarity, courage, and vision — not excuses. It will be defined by bold leadership and the most ambitious plan yet to confront our city’s cost-of-living crisis.”</p>

₹4 lakh saffron in a ₹5 pouch? Salman Khan faces legal row for endorsing 'misleading' pan masala ads

<p>Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi's latest film, Haq, brings a landmark case from the past to the forefront. The Shah Bano case, where the Supreme Court upheld Allahabad High Court's verdict that gave senior lawyer Mohammed Ahmad Khan the order to pay lifelong maintenance to his estranged wife Shazia Bano Begum, is a case that changed the trajectory of muslim women and their rights in India. Inspired by the case and based on Jigna Vora’s book Bano: Bharat Ki Beti, Suparn Verma’s film fictionalises the landmark case, adding emotional depth and drama to make it into a solid and impactful film.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Yami Gautam plays Shazia Bano, and the story is told from her perspective. The story begins in 1967, when Bano Begum, a young, homeschooled daughter of a Maulvi, falls deeply in love with Ahmad Khan, a dynamic lawyer. The couple initially have a blissful marital life, with Ahmad Khan doting over his new wife and going out of his way to prove his love for her. But like most marriages, the spark in their relationship too wears off with time, kids and added responsibilities. As Ahmad marries Samina (debutant Vertika Singh), Shazia finds herself struggling to accept the new alliance and living in the same house. Ahmad’s love withers with time, and Shazia decides to walk out of their marriage with the kids.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Things get ugly after Ahmad stops paying maintenance to Shazia and their kids, and she is compelled to go to court against him. Haq is her film and Gautam shines as Shazia Bano Begum. Her scenes as the new bride, who is deeply in love with her man, to the middle-aged mother who fights tooth and nail to get what’s rightfully hers and her children’s are two different personas of the same person. But Gautam balances the two striking emotions well. Complementing her in every scene is Emraan Hashmi, a man who has really reinvented himself in the past few years, playing myriad characters. Written by Reshu Nath, Haq provides ample scope to both actors to perform and they do not disappoint.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Even the supporting cast, comprising of Vertika Singh, Sheeba Chaddha, Danish Hussain and Aseem Hattangady, deliver credible performances in their limited screen time.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The film talks in detail about the Sharia law, the Quran and women’s rights. While the Quran has been written keeping in mind the interests of both men and women, the film projects how only men seem to have benefited the most and how women deserve their rightful place in a marriage.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It is also a clash of egos for Shazia and Ahmad. For Shazia, who maintains she loves her man, self-respect takes precedence over other emotions even as she and her righteous Maulvi father are shunned by the society for going to court. Meanwhile, Ahmad is a successful lawyer and knows how to bend the argument to his advantage. What starts as a regular marital tiff becomes a matter of pride and ego for him too as he is unable to digest a woman challenging his authority.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The film shifts to a courtroom in the second half and has the mandatory monologues by the two leads. Both Emraan and Yami’s monologues are written effectively, giving contrasting viewpoints and both actors shine in these scenes.</p><h2>What does not work in Haq</h2><p>The film drags slightly when it is inching towards climax. Since the story is known to many, there is no surprise element in the film or in its climax. It also very subtely plays to the gallery but that can almost be overlooked simply because the performances are all stupendous. One can’t help but notice that a film about the muslims and their laws has been made primarily by a Hindu crew.</p><h2>Final verdict</h2><p>Haq is an important film. The fact that the case played an important role in criminalising and abolishing of triple talaq in the recent years by the current government makes it an important watch- to understand the reasons that led to such a historic move in the country. The performances are like cherry on cake. Emraan Hashmi, Yami Gautam have been solid performers all throughout and in Suparn S Verma’s film, they shine.</p><p>Haq is releasing in theatres on November 7. &nbsp;</p>

Haq movie review: Suparn S Verma's new film Haq starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi goes back in time and narrates the incidents that led to the iconic Shah Bano case. The film takes a deeper look at the Sharia law and how it deprived Indian muslim women from basic rights.

The film talks in detail about the Sharia law, the Quran and women’s rights. While the Quran has been written keeping in mind the interests of both men and women, the film projects how only men seem to have benefited the most and how women deserve their rightful place in a marriage. It is also a clash of egos for Shazia and Ahmad. For Shazia, who maintains she loves her man, self-respect takes precedence over other emotions even as she and her righteous Maulvi father are shunned by the society for going to court. Meanwhile, Ahmad is a successful lawyer and knows how to bend the argument to his advantage. What starts as a regular marital tiff becomes a matter of pride and ego for him too as he is unable to digest a woman challenging his authority. The film shifts to a courtroom in the second half and has the mandatory monologues by the two leads. Both Emraan and Yami’s monologues are written effectively, giving contrasting viewpoints and both actors shine in these scenes. What does not work in Haq The film drags slightly when it is inching towards climax. Since the story is known to many, there is no surprise element in the film or in its climax. It also very subtely plays to the gallery but that can almost be overlooked simply because the performances are all stupendous. One can’t help but notice that a film about the muslims and their laws has been made primarily by a Hindu crew. Final verdict Haq is an important film. The fact that the case played an important role in criminalising and abolishing of triple talaq in the recent years by the current government makes it an important watch- to understand the reasons that led to such a historic move in the country. The performances are like cherry on cake. Emraan Hashmi, Yami Gautam have been solid performers all throughout and in Suparn S Verma’s film, they shine. Haq is releasing in theatres on November 7.

<p>Haq movie review: Suparn S Verma's new film Haq starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi goes back in time and narrates the incidents that led to the iconic Shah Bano case. The film takes a deeper look at the Sharia law and how it deprived Indian muslim women of basic rights.&nbsp;</p>

Haq movie review: Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi are terrific in this court room drama

<p>Voicing disappointment, many people walked out of the show even before it ended.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>"This was the worst show ever. So unorganised. Advertisement didn’t say she was just going to chat and dance 2 seconds of each song. Very poorly organised by the promoters. So many people walked out. People were yelling for refunds. Doesn’t matter that she is a beautiful actress and person, everyone who went to the show has to agree it was poorly organised (sic)," one user commented.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Madhuri's team has not responded to the criticism as of now.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

Madhuri Dixit's live show in Toronto faced a huge backlash for being misleading and poorly organised. The show also faced criticism for the late arrival of the actress, which was nearly three hours later than the scheduled time.

Actor Madhuri Dixit is facing backlash over her live show Dil se...Madhuri in Toronto. The event sparked a heated debate on social media, with netizens calling it a waste of money. Attendees slammed the actress for arriving nearly three hours late. The organisers, True Sound Live Ltd., issued a statement clarifying that the event commenced on time with a high-energy opening act featuring Indian Idol singers. However, Dixit's delayed stage appearance was because of her management team's misinformation about the call time, resulting in her late arrival around 10 pm. The event at the Great Canadian Casino Resort started at 7:30 pm, but the actress arrived at 10 PM, leaving fans frustrated. What has been said about the backlash around Madhuri Dixit's show? After the show was embroiled in controversy for being misleading and not turning out as it was marketed, the organisers have reportedly issued a statement saying that the event commenced on time and went exactly as scheduled. However, it was Dixit's team that was responsible for the delay. ''"We at True Sound Live Ltd. would like to clarify the facts regarding the recent Madhuri Dixit - The Golden Girl of Bollywood show held in Toronto, following misleading social media commentary,'' the statement read, as per HT. Also read: Ryan Reynolds is the new villain of Netflix’s live-action Eloise adaptation “The event commenced on time with a high-energy opening act featuring exceptional singers from Indian Idol, exactly as scheduled,” they added. On Dixit's delayed stage appearance, the organisers blamed Dixit's management team for misinformation about the call time and due to which, she arrived late on stage at around 10 pm. ''The show’s format, as shared with Madhuri Dixit’s management, included a Q&A session at 8:30 PM followed by Madhuri’s 60-minute performance segment. However, despite our production team’s readiness and communication throughout the evening, Madhuri Dixit’s own management team misinformed her about the call time, resulting in her late arrival around 10 PM,” they said. “This delay was completely beyond the control of True Sound Live Ltd.” Also read: Haq: Emraan Hashmi-Yami Gautam starrer receives clearance from censor board Further adding to the confusion, some backstage individuals prioritised personal video shoots over participating in the event's smooth coordination.
