Meryl Streep sat next to pal Martin Short at the 2024 Emmy Awards, much to the delight of their fans. Streep and Short sat together at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, during the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, at which the pair's show Only Murders in the Building received eight nominations in various categories.

Rumours of Short and Streep's brimming romance have been doing the rounds for a while now. The two appeared to be close at the 2024 Golden Globes in January. The two have shut down the rumours since then and stated they are 'just friends'.

A rep for Short had told PEOPLE at the time that the pair were “just very good friends, nothing more." Short later dismissed the rumours on Bill Maher’s podcast that same month, as he said the two co-stars are “not a couple, we are just very close friends.”

Streep separated from her husband of 45 years, Don Giummer, six years ago. Earlier this year in May, Short addressed fan interest in his relationship with Streep in a podcast and said, “It’s always interesting. Show business relationships and spec.”

Short and his Only Murders co-star Steve Martin were both nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category on Sunday. Streep also received a nomination in the supporting actress category for her role in the series; Selena Gomez, Paul Rudd, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Matthew Broderick were among the other acting nominees from the hit show. 

Steep and Short may have denied their relationship but the two were seen holding hands at an afterparty for the series’ season 4 premiere afterparty in Los Angeles. The reps still reiterated that the two were ‘just friends’. 

On Sunday, as the two appeared to share a joke as they watched Emmys 2024, fans were elated to see them seated next to each other.
