The festival of colours, Holi, falls during the transitional phase between spring and summer in India. That brings with it a lot of challenges for people celebrating the festival for long hours under the harsh sun. Prolonged exposure to heat during the morning hours when people usually play Holi with water and colours among other things increases the likelihood of heat-related illnesses if proper precautions are not taken.

Dr Divya Gopal, Internal Medicine, Sir HN Reliance Hospital and Research Centre, explained that these simple tips can help in combating heat waves while enjoying the festival: drink plenty of water, fruit juice, or vegetable juice the whole day.

Since heat-related illnesses can also result from salt depletion, it is advisable to substitute an electrolyte-rich sports drink for water during periods of extreme heat and humidity.

Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, rice water, lemon water or buttermilk that help rehydrate the body.

Dr. Vikas Doshi, Consultant Physician, Bhailal Amin General Hospital, Vadodara said that exposure to extreme heat poses significant risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions like diabetes or heart disease.

Even in milder cases, heat exhaustion and dehydration can impair daily activities and lead to weakness.

However, in severe instances, such as heat stroke or hyperthermia, the body's ability to regulate temperature is overwhelmed, potentially resulting in fainting or loss of consciousness.
