Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey to return to IMAX after a successful box office run

Stephen King’s Carrie has long remained one of the most recognisable and enduring stories in modern horror. First published in 1974, the novel’s tale of teenage isolation, bullying, family control and supernatural power has continued to connect with audiences through different adaptations over the years. Now, Mike Flanagan has revisited the beloved classic with a major new twist, expanding Carrie’s story into a contemporary series that brings cyberbullying, social media and a stronger science-fiction edge into the world of King’s original.

Plot of Carrie

The show follows the story of Carrie White, a teenage girl, who has spent most of her life isolated from the outside world under the strict control of her mother, Margaret. After the death of her father, Carrie is introduced to public high school, which becomes her first real exposure to the world, experiencing friendships, teenage relationships and bullying.

Also Read: Paramount completes $110 billion Warner Bros Discovery takeover

In the meantime, she begins to understand her telekinetic abilities, the power to move objects and affect her surroundings with her mind. In this modern setting of Mike Flanagan's vision, Carrie's old-fashioned upbringing, home-sewn clothes and lack of social cues make her an instant target for cruel classmates like Chris Hargensen. Her humiliation goes viral, turning her into an online meme, and she is subject to intense cyberbullying.

As social pressures reach a boiling point, a guilt-ridden student named Sue Snell tries to make amends by having her boyfriend take Carrie to the prom, setting the stage for a manipulative prank involving pig's blood that pushes Carrie to unleash a fiery, supernatural revenge on her tormentors and the community.

Also Read: Bachelorette Weekend: Kylie Jenner makes acting debut in mystery-thriller series

Rather than presenting everyone simply as good or evil, Flanagan attempts to explore what drives their behaviour and how fear, insecurity and social pressure can influence people. At the centre, however, remains Carrie's struggle to understand herself and her powers while dealing with a mother who has controlled almost every aspect of her life and classmates who make her feel like an outsider.

What works?

The biggest strength of the series is Summer H Howell as Carrie. She brings vulnerability to the character while gradually allowing Carrie to become more confident and aware of herself.

Flanagan's version moves the story into the present day, allowing the original themes to intersect with cyberbullying, social media pressure, school violence, conspiracy culture and the complicated dynamics of modern teenage life. Samantha Sloyan's Margaret is another strong element. Rather than making her a straightforward monster, Flanagan gives the character more complexity.

Also Read: Marvel star Simu Liu reportedly ties the knot with Allison Hsu in France

The series incorporates social media, viral videos, school violence, conspiracy thinking and other contemporary concerns. For viewers familiar with previous adaptations, the biggest attraction is seeing Flanagan explore corners of the story that a two-hour film simply couldn't.

What does not work?

The biggest issue is also the show's experiment, ie, the decision to turn into an eight-episode series. The expanded format creates unnecessary side plots and makes the story feel stretched. The series introduces and expands several characters and storylines. Mike Flanagan's series Carrie gives a twist to Stephen King's horror classic with a blend of cyberbullying, teenage alienation and much more. The show stars Samantha H Howell in the titular role, while Samantha Sloyan stars as Margaret.

Plot of Carrie The show follows the story of Carrie White, a teenage girl, who has spent most of her life isolated from the outside world under the strict control of her mother, Margaret. After the death of her father, Carrie is introduced to public high school, which becomes her first real exposure to the world, experiencing friendships, teenage relationships and bullying. Also Read: Paramount completes $110 billion Warner Bros Discovery takeover In the meantime, she begins to understand her telekinetic abilities, the power to move objects and affect her surroundings with her mind. Also Read: Bachelorette Weekend: Kylie Jenner makes acting debut in mystery-thriller series Rather than presenting everyone simply as good or evil, Flanagan attempts to explore what drives their behaviour and how fear, insecurity and social pressure can influence people. Also Read: Marvel star Simu Liu reportedly ties the knot with Allison Hsu in France The series incorporates social media, viral videos, school violence, conspiracy thinking and other contemporary concerns. While that gives the world more texture, it occasionally pulls attention away from Carrie herself. Final verdict Mike Flanagan's Carrie is not a perfect adaptation, but it is an ambitious and largely successful attempt to give Stephen King's classic a new identity. Its biggest achievement is treating Carrie as a character rather than simply a horror icon, with Summer H Howell delivering a compelling performance at the centre of the story. The series is at its strongest when it explores bullying, isolation, motherhood and the complicated emotions behind teenage cruelty. Its modern updates also make King's themes feel relevant without completely abandoning the original premise.

What once was the peak, is now just the beginning.

Paramount and Warner Bros. shaped over a century of culture. By combining them, we aren't rewriting history — we're equipping these iconic studios with a more powerful engine. Together, we are Skydance: a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling.

We chose this name for a few important reasons. First and foremost, as we bring Paramount and Warner Bros. together, we wanted to preserve what has made each of these studios iconic. Both have distinct identities, extraordinary legacies and brands that have resonated with audiences for generations. We never wanted a new corporate identity to diminish, alter or overshadow either one. Instead, we wanted a name that would give the combined company an identity of its own while allowing Paramount and Warner Bros. — and all our extraordinary brands — to remain in the spotlight.

We have big goals for Skydance, and we intend to pursue them with passion, imagination and a willingness to take smart risks. At the same time, we will honor what makes Paramount and Warner Bros. special — giving both studios the opportunity to grow, tell more great stories and bring those stories to even broader audiences around the world, powered by the scale and capabilities of Skydance.

I couldn’t be more excited about what we’re going to build together.
— David Ellison (@davidellison) October 2, 2026

Eva Marie Saint, the Oscar-winning actress who starred in classic Hollywood films including "On the Waterfront" and "North by Northwest," died Tuesday, her publicist said. She was 102 years old. Over her seven-decade career the ever-elegant Saint caught the eyes of influential filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock and Elia Kazan, building a legendary resume in film as well as television, which also earned her an Emmy. Her representative Jeff Sanderson said Saint died of natural causes at home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and loved ones. Saint's performance in "On the Waterfront" was her film debut, and earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Kazan's crime drama with music composed by Leonard Bernstein is widely considered among the greatest films of all time, featuring an all-star cast including Marlon Brando, who also scored an Oscar for his role. The 1954 film catapulted Saint, who played the ethereal foil to Brando's seething macho boxer, to Hollywood fame. She went on to star opposite Cary Grant in Hitchcock's masterpiece "North by Northwest." Saint was considered a surprise choice to play a Hitchcock blonde, the double agent femme fatale who beguiles Grant. But she pulled it off, even though she never worked again with the Englishman, who was notorious for putting his leading ladies through hell and for controlling his actors to the last detail. "He worked with me from the outside in," she later said. “My hair, my makeup, my shoes, my jewelery, my purse, my gloves, everything. And just from creating that exterior for me, he gave me the sense of a spy lady.” - Timeless performance - Saint's storied career also included work with director Otto Preminger, when she played opposite Paul Newman in "Exodus" in 1960. Two years later she was Warren Beatty's love interest in John Frankenheimer's "All Fall Down." With Hollywood at her feet, Saint "could have been a contender" for superstardom -- to echo the most famous line from "On the Waterfront" -- but instead she chose to step back to raise her family with director Jeffrey Hayden. Indeed her eldest son, Darrell, was born just two days after she won her Oscar. The brilliance of Saint's incarnation of Edie, whose brother is lured to his death by the Brando character, has come to be seen by critics as the stand-out performance of a film once revered for its male roles. The restrained Saint could not have been more different to the intense method mumbling of Brando. "He was adorable -- really adorable, but a little frightening," she later said of her enigmatic co-star. "I felt that he could see right through me," she told Turner Classic Movies (TCM) in 2013. More than half a century later, Saint made a big screen comeback as Superman's adoptive mother in the 2006 blockbuster "Superman Returns," when she was in her early 80s. And she was still busy into her mid-90s, playing a small part in the supernatural fantasy "Winter's Tale" alongside Colin Farrell and Russell Crowe, and as a mother superior in the nun drama "Mariette in Ecstasy," which came out in 2019. But having first developed her acting chops in live television dramas, TV remained her preferred medium. She won an Emmy in 1990 for her role as a rich widow in the acclaimed miniseries “People Like Us.” - 65-year marriage - Saint was born on July 4, 1924 in Newark, New Jersey, to Quaker parents whom she credited with developing her sense of discipline. She entered Bowling Green State University with plans to become a teacher but left with a degree in dramatic arts after discovering a passion for theater. Saint trained in New York at the Herbert Berghof Studio and then the Actors Studio -- the home of method acting -- which was co-founded by Kazan. A rarity among Hollywood couples, she and Hayden's marriage lasted for 65 years until his death in 2016. With two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Saint said her longevity had brought extra depth to her work. "The longer you live, the smarter you get, because you've been around, you've seen things. "You've gone through different emotional experiences in your own life, and hopefully, you understand things better," she told TCM. "And that makes you a better actress."
