Rape and sexual assault trial against British comedian and actor Russell Brand began in London on October 14 and he was described as a “ruthless, calculated and manipulative” sexual predator by the prosecutors who presented their case against him on the opening day.

The 51-year-old faces seven charges regarding alleged offences against six women from 1999 to 2009. The charges comprise three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault.

Brand has denied all the allegations and pleaded not guilty.

What the prosecution said against Brand

Opening the prosecution's case at Southwark Crown Court, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC alleged that Brand pursued sexual encounters without regard for the women's wishes.

She reportedly told the jury that some of the women had explicitly objected to his advances, while others had little opportunity to respond.

“His sexual contact was indiscriminate and voracious. He would be nice when he wanted to be, funny – undoubtedly – charming, likeable even,” Karmy-Jones said, as quoted by The Telegraph.

She further alleged "he was ruthless, he was calculating, he was manipulative and, the prosecution say – he was a sexual predator."

Also Read: Russell Brand's sexual assault trial begins; comedian appears in London court with wife Laura Gallacher

The prosecutor said the alleged incidents took place in different settings, including a hotel room, workplaces, a bar's toilet cubicle and Brand's home. According to the prosecution, the six women did not know one another and came forward independently.

The prosecution also referred to accounts from people who knew Brand during the early stages of his career. Karmy-Jones cited comments from Mark Pinheiro, a former friend of Brand's, who allegedly described the comedian as someone who “was rampant in his desire to score sex”.

Another acquaintance, Andrew Dobson, reportedly characterised Brand as highly impulsive before he became famous, saying that women and sex had become a goal and an obsession for him.

Pinheiro is also expected to give evidence about conversations he allegedly had with Brand during their trip to the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth in 1999.

Allegations against Brand

The charges are regarding the allegations made by six women over incidents said to have occurred between 1999 and 2009 in locations including London and Bournemouth.

Also Read: Russell Brand's sexual assault case delayed; trial to begin in October

The allegations first came to light in September 2023.

According to the reports, the earliest allegation is by a woman in her twenties who met Brand at a fringe event during the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth in September 1999. Karmy-Jones told the court that the woman later went to her hotel room with Brand. When she returned from the bathroom, he was partially undressed and behaving strangely, the prosecution alleged.

Describing the woman's account, the prosecutor said Brand was “prancing around the room – a bit like an ostrich, doing silly walks like Basil Fawlty”. The woman allegedly froze before Brand raped her. The prosecution said she was left distressed and did not report the incident at the time, partly because of his celebrity status.

A second allegation involves an incident in 2001 alleged by a woman who worked at MTV. According to the prosecution, Brand attempted to pull her into a men's toilet after she offered to show him where the facilities were. The woman resisted and managed to break free.

Also Read: Russell Brand sexual assault case: Katy Perry's ex-husband pleads not guilty, trial set for 2026

Two further allegations concern incidents in 2004 and 2004-2005. In the first, a woman allegedly encountered Brand at a party in Soho, where he is accused of grabbing her breasts before pulling her into a toilet cubicle and orally raping her.

The next allegation involves a woman working at a radio station who said Brand grabbed her face, pushed her against a wall and kissed her aggressively while groping her. According to the prosecution, she eventually managed to push him away.

The fifth allegation is connected to a woman who met Brand after attending one of his shows at London's Hammersmith Apollo in 2009. Russell Brand is facing seven sexual offence charges involving six women over alleged incidents between 1999 and 2009. The trial began at Southwark Crown Court, and the comedian arrived with his wife.

What the prosecution said against Brand Opening the prosecution's case at Southwark Crown Court, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC alleged that Brand pursued sexual encounters without regard for the women's wishes. She further alleged "he was ruthless, he was calculating, he was manipulative and, the prosecution say – he was a sexual predator." According to the prosecution, the six women did not know one another and came forward independently. Allegations against Brand The charges are regarding the allegations made by six women over incidents said to have occurred between 1999 and 2009 in locations including London and Bournemouth. Also Read: Russell Brand's sexual assault case delayed; trial to begin in October The allegations first came to light in September 2023. The prosecution said the pair initially engaged in consensual sexual activity. However, Brand allegedly later raped her anally after she had asked him to stop. Karmy-Jones told the court that the woman experienced significant distress following the alleged incident. The prosecution also referred to text messages allegedly exchanged between the pair at a later date, including a message in which Brand reportedly apologised after the woman confronted him about his behaviour. Also Read: Russell Brand to headline New York event amid sexual assault charges As per reports, the final allegation concerns a woman who was working on a Channel 4 promotional video in 2009. According to the prosecution, Brand became frustrated during filming and his production team told the woman that she needed to massage him for the shoot to continue. Karmy-Jones alleged that Brand subsequently approached the woman while she was seated and placed his head in her groin area. The prosecution said she later raised concerns about the incident at work and subsequently reported it to the police. Brand has denied the allegations. The prosecution told the court that, when questioned by police, he maintained that he had never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity. Brand's wife comes to his support Brand arrived at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday morning accompanied by his wife, Laura Gallacher. We explained all of this to Kelly Clarkson.”

The store also claimed that they offered the singer another automaton bird that she could buy. Reacting to the store's response, Clarkson said,“Cool, cool. Sure, it wasn’t for sale. That’s the narrative Art of Play is gonna go with so the whole conversation we had when I asked you if it was for sale whilst pointing to the price tag hanging on the wall with the title Singing Bird didn’t happen as you elevator eyed me saying in a condescending tone ‘yes, it’s for sale but it costs 15,000 dollars so if you’d like me to find something comparable for you I can,’”

Clarkson wrote. “That all never happened and now it’s not for sale. Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle called out Donald Trump's use of the phrase "fake news" during the UK premiere of Ink, a drama exploring the career of media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

At the UK premiere of the drama "Ink" following the makings of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, Oscar-winning British director Danny Boyle criticised US President Donald Trump's tendency to dismiss things as "fake news". On the red carpet at the London Film Festival on Monday, Boyle told AFP the film sees the "first seeds of the attention economy" sown by Murdoch in the late 1960s, as he transforms a struggling broadsheet The Sun into a sensationalist tabloid profiting off sex and scandal. Australian actor Guy Pearce plays the young and ambitious Murdoch who has moved to the UK from Australia and is seeking to upend the media establishment, alongside Jack O'Connell as the pugnacious Sun editor Larry Lamb, a northerner taking on London's Fleet Street. "The beginning of the film is very entertaining, and lures people in to feel complicit in that, before it moves into a darkness," said the "Trainspotting" and "Slumdog Millionaire" director. "There is a cost to that attention economy, which we're now paying," said Boyle. "Nobody knows what the truth is anymore ... The most powerful man in the world says a fact is fake news. And he says a lie is his Truth Social." The real-life Murdoch, 95, oversees a sprawling media empire which holds considerable sway as a major conservative political force in Britain, the United States and his native Australia. Britain's exit from the European Union and the rise of Donald Trump are credited at least partly to Murdoch, while his media have long carried a pro-business agenda and have been sceptical about climate change. "I've always had a bit of a fascination with Rupert Murdoch. And it was a great sort of origin story," Pearce told AFP. "It was interesting to find a character who is to some degree quiet and reserved and somewhat old-fashioned, but also ambitious and wanted to uphold a sense of integrity through journalism." The Murdoch dynasty has moved from shaping television screens to being portrayed on them in recent years, inspiring shows, documentaries and plays, and even serving as an inspiration for cruel patriarch Logan Roy and his offspring in the hit HBO series "Succession". "Murdoch is fascinating, because everybody has such opinions about him anyway, very deserved opinions, in modern terms," said Boyle. "But he was a very different man then." The film, adapted from a play by British playwright James Graham, will be released in cinemas in the United States on December 11 and on January 8 in the UK and Ireland.

I love small businesses and know they are important and I always support them, but you don’t get a free pass to treat people less than in your store just because you are a small business.”

Store reacts to the online backlash

The controversy also brought significant attention to Art of Play, which sells home goods, puzzles, games, toys and books. Following Clarkson's initial post, the business said, "Imagine our surprise when our small local business was suddenly attacked by 8 million people who have never visited our store. Singer Kelly Clarkson has called a store in Brooklyn for treating her disrespectfully during a shopping trip. The matter was over a $15,000 singing bird automaton.

Kelly Clarkson has recently been making headlines after the singer and television host got into a dispute with a local Brooklyn store. The disagreement began after she claimed that a staff member made assumptions about her ability to afford an expensive item, which led her to share her experience on social media. Kelly Clarkson's allegations On October 10, the singer took to X and alleged that an interaction with an employee left her feeling judged. "Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy and literally was looked at as if I couldn’t afford it and was told he could find something comparable for me." The singer further added, "Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale." "But y’all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts' character in Pretty Woman," she said. The post quickly went viral, sparking a debate on social media. What was the controversy about? The disagreement is reportedly about a mechanical bird that Clarkson says she wanted to purchase during her visit. The item, described as a singing and dancing bird automaton, reportedly had a price tag of $15,000. Following Clarkson's post, Art of Play issued a statement on Instagram on Sunday, October 11, writing, "Yesterday, Kelly Clarkson visited us in Brooklyn and inquired about buying ‘Molly,’ a one-of-a-kind singing and dancing bird automaton who plays an important role in the magic shows we host here. Molly is permanently attached to the wall and isn’t for sale." Also Read: Kelly Clarkson's ex-husband Brandon Blackstock dies at 48 after battling cancer for three years

The horror flick "Other Mommy", starring Oscar winner Jessica Chastain, debuted atop the North American box office with $27.5 million in ticket sales, while awards hopeful "The Social Reckoning" flopped with a weak start, industry estimates showed Sunday. "Other Mommy", from Universal and Blumhouse, stars Chastain in a dual role as a sinister entity terrorising a child -- made even worse by the fact that the demon resembles the girl's mother. The film triumphed despite poor reviews and audience reception, according to analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. "Horror movies are generally immune to a negative reception, but this is extreme, and business is going to drop sharply," said Gross. "The idea of a possessed and frightening mom, played by Jessica Chastain, is attracting audiences and should work around the world before poor word-of-mouth catches up with it." It has raked in another $181 million abroad. Paramount's "Heart of the Beast", starring Brad Pitt as a former soldier and his loyal but traumatised combat dog as they survive in the Alaskan wilderness, finished in fourth place with $7.1 million. Also Read: Jessica Chastain's Other Mommy trailer becomes the internet's latest horror obsession Opening in fifth place at just $5.5 million was Facebook drama "The Social Reckoning", the hotly anticipated sequel to the award-winning 2010 film "The Social Network", which told the origin story of Mark Zuckerberg's social media empire. "The Social Reckoning", written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, stars Oscar-winning Mikey Madison as real-life Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, who leaked internal documents to a reporter (Jeremy Allen White) revealing some of the company's more nefarious practices. Jeremy Strong plays Zuckerberg, a role taken on in the original film by Jesse Eisenberg. "Stories about corporate intrigue, money and power have found a home on TV. They lack the cinematic qualities that excite big screen audiences, like emotion, spectacle and fantasy," Gross said. Rounding out the top 10: "Forgotten Island" ($4.5 million) "Primetime" ($4 million) "Digger" ($3.2 million) "Angel and the Badman" ($2.1 million) "The Odyssey" ($2 million)
