Gwyneth Paltrow confirms Bill Clinton slept through her film Emma but it doesn't bother her

Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma

In a new interview, Gwyneth Paltrow has confirmed a rumour about Bill Clinton sleeping through a screening of her film Emma at the White House. The 1996 Jane Austen adaptation held a special screening at the White House and Bill Clinton was the US President at the time.

Appearing on theHot Ones show, when host Sean Evans asked whether Bill passed out during the screening, she curtly said, “True!” and added, “He was snoring right in front of me. I was like, ‘Wow, I guess this is going to be a real hit movie.’ But it was! So f*** you, Bill Clinton!"

After confirming that Bill slept during the screening, Gwyneth said that she didn’t feel bad about him sleeping through the film since the movie turned out to be a massive commercial success. Also, Gwyneth earned critical acclaim for her performance in Emma. It is one of the first few indie films that Gwyneth was a part of and it helped boost her career.

Emma was a huge success

Emma was a box office success with nearly $40 million worldwide on a production budget under $8 million. The film picked up two Academy Award nominations, one for costume design and another for original score. It won the Oscar for Best Original Score.

Other successful films of Gwyneth Paltrow at the time

Gwyneth Paltrow went on to star in other successful features like The Talented Mr. Ripley and Shakespeare in Love. Her performance as Viola de Lesseps in Shakespeare in Love won her the Academy Award for Best Actress.

On Hot Ones, she also spoke about Hollywood's saturation with comic book films aka the superhero films. The last couple of films from the MCU have not done so well at the box office with the studio looking at changing something structural. Gwyneth, who has featured in MCU's Iron Man film franchise as Pepper Potts, as well as in other MCU films, including Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Endgame said, "I look at the industry as a whole, this big push into superhero movies… you can only make so many good ones that feel truly original, and yet they’re still always trying to reach as many people as possible, which sometimes hinders quality or specificity or real point of view.”

She added, “You get more diversity of art when there is less at stake and people can express their true voice and make a film the way they want to make it. Those are generally the more resonant ones."
