And Karisma’s new show has all of it. So what makes Brown different? That depends on the viewer’s patience. If you connect with it, you will sit through all eight episodes. If not, the first episode alone might be heavy enough to make you pause and walk away. Despite that, I watched the entire show. That’s exactly how Abhinay Deo crafts the world of Brown. Set in Kolkata, a city known for its vibrancy, the show lets darkness lead. The show runs on the pillars of sadness, grief, and mystery. So while you are watching Rita and her partner solve the murder, your attention is not on the case. Instead, it gets swept up in her sadness, her trauma, and the question of what happened to her that turned her into a loner and an alcoholic.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Rita’s character is so consumed by sadness that it starts to weigh on you as a viewer. You do feel empathy for her, but the sadness is so overwhelming that it pushes past the point of connection. The show is dark, with everything you have probably seen before in the neo-noir crime world, a sad protagonist, a brutal murder, an antagonist, and the culprits that takes all the attention and torture from the police. So most of the show does not feel new or exciting.</p>

<h3>What works and what doesn't?</h3><p>The answer to that is patience. If you’re someone who can pause, step away, and come back to a show, Brown might work for you. But for binge-watchers, it’s not an easy one-sitting watch. At the start, the show sticks to its plot. The first two episodes are genuinely interesting. But as the story moves forward, so many new characters are introduced that it becomes hard to focus on any one of them. Another drawback was the heavy use of Bengali. I enjoyed the music, and the rap part. But if the dialogue had been limited a bit, it would have been easier for viewers who don’t speak the language.</p>

<p>However, what makes you stick with the show is the way the story is told. Each episode begins with a brief backstory of a character, often a young boy. It’s an intriguing way to tease what’s coming next, and all this with Amogh Deshpande’s cinematography, which captures the tone of the situation perfectly. But after the fourth episode, the story derails, and it becomes tough to stay focused. While you are trying to follow a boyfriend subplot, a political angle suddenly appears. Then the police start investigating someone’s past, but whose past? The scenes aren’t well assembled, so it gets confusing to track what’s happening and when. For example, Sanjay, played by Paresh Pahuja, enters with intrigue, but his character is never fully explored. Too many threads end on an unfinished note.</p>

She plays the role with raw honesty, and surprisingly, she suits up in the role of Rita; nothing about her feels forced, not even when she lights a cigarette. Surya Sharma is excellent as Inspector Arjun. Paheh’s character has potential but gets sidelined. Jisshu Sengupta is wasted in a role that adds nothing but the star value. Helen and Soni Razdan add a little light to this dark world, perhaps as a metaphor for how family can be a source of happiness and light when everything else feels bleak and dark.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Abhinay Deo crafts Brown as a slow burn that tests your patience. That’s exactly how Abhinay Deo crafts the world of Brown. Set in Kolkata, a city known for its vibrancy, the show lets darkness lead. The show runs on the pillars of sadness, grief, and mystery. So while you are watching Rita and her partner solve the murder, your attention is not on the case. Instead, it gets swept up in her sadness, her trauma, and the question of what happened to her that turned her into a loner and an alcoholic. Rita’s character is so consumed by sadness that it starts to weigh on you as a viewer. You do feel empathy for her, but the sadness is so overwhelming that it pushes past the point of connection. The show is dark, with everything you have probably seen before in the neo-noir crime world, a sad protagonist, a brutal murder, an antagonist, and the culprits that takes all the attention and torture from the police. So most of the show does not feel new or exciting.

We felt it was unfair to keep them in loop, while we are still waiting for a possible release date.”</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Set to release on January 9 on the occasion of Pongal, the movie has been stuck in a dispute with the Central Board of Film Certification. The decision to refund the money comes more than five months after the movie missed its scheduled release date. Before this, in March, Amazon Prime Video revoked its OTT deal.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to India Today, the platform acquired the digital rights of the movie for around Rs 120 crore. <p>First and foremost, it's great that Anurag Kashyap is back directing a film. Kashyap has, in the past, delivered some of the most iconic films of our time, which have been lauded for being gritty and real. The man has, in the last few years, forayed into acting (he is earning praises in that department, too) and has publicly admitted that he is disillusioned with Bollywood and its ways. Which is why his latest directorial venture, Bandar, featuring Bobby Deol in the lead, is a special film. The film has been written by Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Banerjee, the men behind web series like Pataal Lok 2 and Kohhra. &nbsp;Expectations, thus, were high from Bandar. But does it live up to those expectations? Here’s what I thought.</p><h2>What's the plot of Bandar?</h2><p>Deol plays a has-been TV star, Samar Mehra. Much like his career, his finances and personal life are dwindling. He is falsely accussed of rape by a jilted ex (Sapna Pabbi) and taken into police custody at the middle of the night. And while his current girlfriend Khushi (Saba Azad), sister (Sanya Malhotra) and lawyer (Riddhi Sen) run pillar to post to get him out, Samar is put behind bars with other under-trial accused men.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Samar is a complicated man who is aware of his fading career but is too entitled to admit he needs to work hard and do better. He also has high self-esteem, so he doesn't want to ask his parents for help. He hates the idea of marriage and is on a dating app where he mostly swipes right to women much younger than him. All personality traits come to bite him as he is locked up in jail with some of the most hardened criminals. While initially he is at a loss and constantly harps that he is innocent, he eventually finds his way to survive, even as he waits to get bail.</p><h2>What works</h2><p>Much like Kashyap’s other films, there is a sly humour amid all the grim, intense thriller. Kashyap, along with writers Sharma and Banerjee, manages to find humour amid everyday mundanity. Casting couch is mispronounced at the heat of the moment as couch potato, a police officer gets into the nitty-gritty of swiping right or left, and a frustrated lawyer curses in Bengali under his breath.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Special compliments to the casting director of Bandar as the film not only features known faces from Bollywood but also has well-known actors from regional cinema playing key roles. There is Malayalam actor Indrajit Sukumaran playing gang leader Lijo who takes Samar in his gang, Kannada actor director Raj B Shetty as the inamte lizard man, theatre star Sukant Goel as another inmate, Marathi actor Jitendra Joshi as head cop and Bengali actor Riddhi Sen as Samar’s lawyer.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The film, however, centres on Deol, who delivers a fine performance as a delusional, entitled actor whose days of glory are in the past. <p>The women in the film -Sapna Pabbi, Sanya Malhotra, and Saba Azad- are equally good, but their characters are there only to enable the lead character of Deol.</p><h2>What does not work</h2><p>The film begins with a lot of promise. It has an engaging narrative that jumps right into the plot. However, it lacks a clear stance. It is a prison drama which also looks at the problematic judiciary that delays justice for those who deserve it. It also gives a perspective of the other side of the #MeToo movement, the men who have unnecessarily been vilified. But the messaging is sketchy. At some point, you also feel Samar is an entitled prick who deserves the treatment in jail for not respecting the women in his life.</p>

<p> </p><p>Bandar also suffers from the curse of the second half, where the story shifts to the jail and its way. Too many shots of the soiled toilets is also not appealing. I understand the intent but it is overtly shown far too many times.</p><h2>Final verdict</h2><p>Bandar delivers in parts. Bobby Deol and other actors are in good form. Deol in particular plays the flawed Samar with perfection. The narrative also raises pertinent questions about perception around rape accussed and how easily society puts a label on them without knowing the full story. But Bandar’s lack of clarity in the second half dampens an otherwise good narrative. Bandar, ultimately, is a middling affair.</p><p> </p><p>Bandar is running in theatres across the country.</p>

First and foremost, it's great that Anurag Kashyap is back directing a film. Kashyap has, in the past, delivered some of the most iconic films of our time, which have been lauded for being gritty and real. The man has, in the last few years, forayed into acting (he is earning praises in that department, too) and has publicly admitted that he is disillusioned with Bollywood and its ways. Which is why his latest directorial venture, Bandar, featuring Bobby Deol in the lead, is a special film. The film has been written by Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Banerjee, the men behind web series like Pataal Lok 2 and Kohhra. Expectations, thus, were high from Bandar. But does it live up to those expectations? Here’s what I thought. What's the plot of Bandar? Deol plays a has-been TV star, Samar Mehra. Much like his career, his finances and personal life are dwindling. He is falsely accussed of rape by a jilted ex (Sapna Pabbi) and taken into police custody at the middle of the night. And while his current girlfriend Khushi (Saba Azad), sister (Sanya Malhotra) and lawyer (Riddhi Sen) run pillar to post to get him out, Samar is put behind bars with other under-trial accused men. Samar is a complicated man who is aware of his fading career but is too entitled to admit he needs to work hard and do better. He also has high self-esteem, so he doesn't want to ask his parents for help. He hates the idea of marriage and is on a dating app where he mostly swipes right to women much younger than him. All personality traits come to bite him as he is locked up in jail with some of the most hardened criminals. While initially he is at a loss and constantly harps that he is innocent, he eventually finds his way to survive, even as he waits to get bail. What works Much like Kashyap’s other films, there is a sly humour amid all the grim, intense thriller. Kashyap, along with writers Sharma and Banerjee, manages to find humour amid everyday mundanity. Casting couch is mispronounced at the heat of the moment as couch potato, a police officer gets into the nitty-gritty of swiping right or left, and a frustrated lawyer curses in Bengali under his breath. Special compliments to the casting director of Bandar as the film not only features known faces from Bollywood but also has well-known actors from regional cinema playing key roles. There is Malayalam actor Indrajit Sukumaran playing gang leader Lijo who takes Samar in his gang, Kannada actor director Raj B Shetty as the inamte lizard man, theatre star Sukant Goel as another inmate, Marathi actor Jitendra Joshi as head cop and Bengali actor Riddhi Sen as Samar’s lawyer. The film, however, centres on Deol, who delivers a fine performance as a delusional, entitled actor whose days of glory are in the past. Bobby Deol’s radical 2026 lineup: From YRF’s Alpha to Anurag Kashyap’s dark drama Bandar

<p>Producer and former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani passed away on Thursday at the age of 76. Nihalani was one of the producers, who backed and supported the masala entertaining movies and was behind movies such as Gunahon Ka Faisla, Paap Ki Duniya, Mitti Aur Sona, Shola Aur Shabnam and Aankhen.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Nihalani died at his Mumbai residence after a prolonged illness. The filmmaker had been unwell for quite some time and had been admitted to the hospital. The cause of death is currently unknown.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>After the sad news of his death broke, several Bollywood celebrities attended his funeral to pay their last respects. Among many, actor Govinda, also paid tribute to the late producer, who had worked with him in the initial years of his career.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Paying tribute to the producer, the actor shared that Pahlaj was the one, who helped him rise above poverty.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The actor said, “Param aadarniya Pahlaj Nihalani, humaare neev ke pathar the. <p>Remembering the late producer, he shared a note on X, reading, “Pahlaj ji was one of the first people to believe in me. When I was finding my feet in the industry, he opened doors, guided me &amp; always stood by me with warmth and encouragement,” he wrote.</p><p><br>“What I will remember most is not just the producer he was, but the person he was – someone you could call upon without hesitation, knowing he would always try to help. Producer and former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani passed away on Thursday at the age of 76. Nihalani was one of the producers, who backed and supported the masala entertaining movies and was behind movies such as Gunahon Ka Faisla, Paap Ki Duniya, Mitti Aur Sona, Shola Aur Shabnam and Aankhen. In our country, mental health carries a stigma, making it difficult to talk about. But as soon as I started speaking about it, I felt lighter.
