Sridevi once offered a film to Amar Singh Chamkila but he turned it down; here's why!

Imtiaz Ali-helmed Amar Singh Chamkila biopic, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, premiered on Netflix on Friday. And in no time, the film became the talk of the town. From Diljit's performance to Imtiaz's unique storytelling, netizens raved about every aspect of the film and recommended their friends and family to watch it.

Amid the buzz, an old interview of Chamkila's friend Sawarn Sivia has resurfaced on YouTube. In the clip, he is seen telling India Today that Sridevi once wanted to work with the famous Punjabi singer but he turned her down.

According to a report, Sawarn said in the interview that Sridevi loved watching Chamkila perform and even asked him to work with her in a film. However, he turned the offer down.

"Sridevi was a fan of Amar Singh Chamkila; she even asked him to be a hero in her film. But he told her he can’t speak in Hindi. She offered to get him trained in a month, but he said he would lose ₹10 lakh in that time. Sridevi then agreed to do a Punjabi film with him, but that couldn’t happen," Sawarn told India Today.

Who was Amar Singh Chamkila?

Chamkila, who was born Dhanni Ram in Punjab, was known for singing polarising songs, which were oftenseen as a provocative, unapologetic, and misogynistic exploration of the darker aspects of Punjabi Society.His fans called him the "Elvis of Punjab". During the last few years of his life, Chamkilaaddressed issues related to caste, alcoholism, infidelity, and gender dynamics.

The lives of Chamkila, his wife and two other members of their group were cut short when they became targets of an assassination on March 8, 1988. The case still remains unsolved.

In the biopic, Diljit is playing the titular role of Amar Singh Chamkila. The film also stars Parineeti Chopra in the lead role as Amarjot Singh.
