India women skipper Harmanpreet Kaur is by far the best skipper to have led the national cricket team with multiple titles under her name. Her most recent ICC trophy was the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup - the first ever for the team. The skipper, however, is 37 and would be around 40 by the time the next ODI World Cup comes. Former India player Diana Edulji, keeping Harman's age in mind, wants vice-captain and dashing opener Smriti Mandhana to be appointed India women's skipper at the earliest.<h2>Edulji wants Mandhana to replace Harman as skipper at earliest</h2>"We are holding back Smriti Mandhana for a long time. By the time the next World Cup comes along, Harman will be nearing 40, so let’s give a good run to Smriti and look at two youngsters as vice-captains. The BCCI adopted the same stance for the men's Asia Cup last year following the Pahalgam terror attack in India's Jammu and Kashmir by Pak-based terrorists.<h2>Harman's record as India skipper</h2>Harman made her India debut in 2009 and became captain of the side in 2013. Since then, she has led India in 51 ODIs and won 30 of them, the second most for India behind Mithali Raj's 89 wins in 155 matches. The record gets reversed in T20Is, where Harman has won 89 matches out of 152 she has led the side compared to 17 wins in 32 matches for Mithali. Harman's 89 wins as skipper in Women's T20Is are also the most for any captain in the format.

Steve Smith says he is still traumatised by the infamous "Sandpapergate" ball-tampering scandal in 2018, but the former Australia skipper is undaunted about returning to South Africa for his first Test series since. I get anxious around cameras to be honest," he told News Corp. in an interview published Thursday."That was a traumatic experience in my life and when I hear the flash of a camera it makes me revisit that in a way."The 24-48 hours of being told by James Sutherland (then-Cricket Australia chief executive) that I was getting banned for a year. That's somewhere I'd like not to get to again, but I certainly learned from that and have been able to move forward with my life."I've tried to kind of erase a lot of 2018 and what happened," he added."I can't remember a lot about the series. I've tried to block most of it out of my memory bank."Smith has been back to South Africa for a white-ball series since 2018, but not for a Test and he is bracing for hostile crowds. But the 37-year-old is unperturbed, having negotiated multiple Ashes tours to England since 2018, where the Barmy Army abused him relentlessly."It's something I'm kind of used to. I've copped a lot at times away from home at different venues across my career and it's something that I take in my own stride," he said."I use it as motivation to try and go out and do well and try and take a positive from it."

"I'm not a big fan of cameras ... I get anxious around cameras to be honest," he told News Corp. in an interview published Thursday. "That was a traumatic experience in my life and when I hear the flash of a camera it makes me revisit that in a way. "The 24-48 hours of being told by James Sutherland (then-Cricket Australia chief executive) that I was getting banned for a year. That and going through the airport in Johannesburg getting absolutely mobbed, and then flying back and doing that press conference. "I still have little flashbacks here and there of it." Smith bore the brunt of the scandal that is considered one of Australian sport's darkest moments, but bounced back emphatically. He smashed a superb century against England on his return and has gone from strength to strength, with 10,920 Test runs so far at an average of 56. "It was certainly a difficult period, particularly the initial period a few days after," he said. "The mental state I was in was not great. That's somewhere I'd like not to get to again, but I certainly learned from that and have been able to move forward with my life. "I've tried to kind of erase a lot of 2018 and what happened," he added. "I can't remember a lot about the series. I've tried to block most of it out of my memory bank." Smith has been back to South Africa for a white-ball series since 2018, but not for a Test and he is bracing for hostile crowds. But the 37-year-old is unperturbed, having negotiated multiple Ashes tours to England since 2018, where the Barmy Army abused him relentlessly. "It's something I'm kind of used to. I've copped a lot at times away from home at different venues across my career and it's something that I take in my own stride," he said. "I use it as motivation to try and go out and do well and try and take a positive from it."

Smith, preparing for the first Test in Durban on October 9 before the series moves to Gqeberha and Cape Town, said he still suffers flashbacks to a traumatic period of his life.

Sanju Samson may have helped India defend the T20 World Cup in March, but the batter has been under constant scrutiny for his form since then. His lack of runs in IPL 2026 and in subsequent T20I matches coincided with the rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who won the Orange Cap in IPL 2026 for scoring the most runs (776). Since the IPL, India have played three T20I series — against Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe - while the fourth series against Afghanistan is currently underway. Across these series, Samson has featured in six matches: two each against Ireland, England, and Afghanistan. Also Read - <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ex-india-all-rounder-yuvraj-singh-wants-india-to-avoid-massive-changes-before-odi-world-cup-2027-1789529543148">Ex-India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh wants India to avoid 'massive changes' before ODI World Cup 2027</a>He was rested for the Zimbabwe series and was dropped from the last three of five T20Is against England in favor of Sooryavanshi. The batter, however, is aware of the challenges his lack of runs poses and that Sooryavanshi, at 15 years of age, is waiting in the wings for his turn.<h2>Samson opens up on competition with Sooryavanshi</h2>"A 15-year-old kid is coming on the back of scoring 700–800 runs (in the IPL). I did not perform in two or three games and he was in form, and we wanted to win games in that series. It was very understandable from a leadership point of view. I have been in this situation as an IPL captain. I have also taken tough calls," Samson said after the second T20I against Afghanistan regarding Sooryavanshi being picked ahead of him in the England T20Is.The batter also addressed the online criticism regarding his lack of runs, sharing: "Being an Indian cricketer, it’s not easy to face failures, but that’s where my experience comes in. I try to shut out the noise and be confident. I come out and still keep scoring at a high strike rate — even taking chances, knowing that if I fail again, I’ll be facing a lot of noise again. Australian Test veteran Steve Smith addressed his international future, saying that although he remains unsure about travelling to England for the 2027 Ashes, he wishes to represent his team at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028. Steve Smith targets gold at the LA28 Olympics while remaining uncertain about playing the 2027 Ashes in England as he takes his Test career series by series.

Australian Test veteran Steve Smith addressed his international future, saying that although he remains unsure about travelling to England for the 2027 Ashes, he wishes to represent his team at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028. As cricket returns to the Summer Games for the first time in 128 years, Smith, who would be 39 by that time, admitted winning an Olympic gold for Australia is one of his definite aims. Having retired from ODIs following the Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE last year, Smith remains an active T20I and Test player. It’s been really good,” he continued.
