Japan captain Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming was proud of his team after they pushed the defending T20I champions India to the brink during their one-off T20I in Sano on Tuesday (Sep 22). Kendel said it was special to push the rain-marred five-over-a-side fixture till the last ball, where India managed to pull off an escape and beat the Associate Nation by just two runs. Kendel said facing India had ‘emotions running pretty high within their group’ as the two teams contested their maiden international face-off. "I've been saying to a few other guys that when [the game] gets that close, [the loss is] actually a little bit tougher to take and the emotions are running pretty high in our group," Kadowaki-Fleming said. "But the fact that we were able to run the best team in the world, in my opinion, to the last ball of a game is pretty special. "I'm sure there will be a couple of moments that replay through our minds on the long bus road now to nowhere but, yeah, it's a feeling of pride at the moment,” he continued. Chasing a mere 33 in five overs, Japan came agonisingly close to beating India in what would have been the biggest upset in all of cricket, with Kendel top-scoring (12 off 12 balls). His wicket on the last ball of the fourth over left Japan with eight to win from six balls. Axar Patel bowled the final over, and despite conceding a couple of singles and wides, he defended the target as India won its 200th T20I. "They've got some world-class spinners, Axar [Patel], Washington [Sundar] and Ravi Bishnoi bowling," Kadowaki-Fleming said. “On our Sano wicket, we knew it was going to be an extreme challenge, but at [a required run-rate of] six-and-a-half, your mind does sort of wander and think you get a couple out of the middle and you never know.”
‘Momentous Occasion’ – Kendel on facing India
While Japan, ranked 41st in men’s T20Is, has risen through the ranks over the years, they have never faced a Test-playing nation. Having Shreyas Iyer’s Indian T20I team as their first high-profile opponent was a monumental moment for them. "Today was a really momentous occasion, in that it was the first time we were able to face a Full Member. "We've got around a 36-hour turnaround now [before the start of the Asian Games]...So, we're going to rest up tomorrow, and we'll prepare for that game, and obviously if we win one of our next two matches, we'll have a chance to play another Full Member in the knockout. England pacer and Ashes hero Mark Wood has announced his international retirement after losing battles to injuries that marred his career. At 36, Wood won it all: a home Ashes (2015), an ODI World Cup (2019) and the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022, and will always be remembered as the fastest England bowler of all time. In 146 international matches, Wood picked up 253 wickets, including 119 in 38 Tests at 30.79. After injuring his knee midway through the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan, Wood featured in only one match: the away Ashes opener in November last year, which was also his final appearance in international cricket. Wood remains active in franchise leagues worldwide and would like to feature for Durham in the T20 Blast next. He also enjoys his time working as a media professional.

Taking to his social media handles on Tuesday morning, hours before England’s ODI series opener against Sri Lanka in Durham, Wood announced his decision to step aside from England Cricket. Also read| Asian Games 2026: India beat Sri Lanka in final to defend women's cricket gold Battling injuries over the years, Wood explained how he felt since last featuring for England almost a year ago. "It's been a long time since Perth, in November, my last game, so it's been a year-and-a-half where it's just ground me down to thinking, 'Look, I'm never going to get back to this level,” Wood said in an interview with Sky Sports. “My contract ends in September, and I think it just feels like the right time. I never wanted to give up [playing for] England, but the lads that are coming through are doing a fantastic job. The news should be about the lads that are going to get their contract, and I can just focus on other things.”
Want to be Remembered as a ‘Great Teammate’
When asked how he wanted to be remembered, England’s express pacer said he would like it if people remember him for being someone who gave it all for the team and was cherished by his teammates. Revealing his favourite memories, Wood shied away from naming any on-field moments, picking behind-the-scenes memories instead. "My best memories are with the lads - not moments that I've had, which I do cherish myself - but I think of times when I've done things with the guys like quiz nights in the team room, and seeing my family and friends up at The Oval when we've won the Ashes. It's as much for them as me. "I'd love to just be remembered for being great amongst the lads in the dressing room, a great team-mate, and someone that tried their absolute best all the time - and that should be a given when you're playing for England. "I really hope that they thought that I was resilient; I kept putting it in when I needed to - not necessarily just when I wanted to, but when everybody needed us to. I think that's what I'd most like to be remembered by: not by cricketing stats or things like that, more by the person I was and the type of cricketer I was really. And I could bowl fast!” Wood continued.

The Big Bash League (BBL), Australia's premier franchise-based T20 tournament, is coming to India with the Melbourne Renegades set to face off against the Perth Scorchers on December 12 at Chepauk in Chennai. This is the first time a BBL match will be played in India, and there's already quite a buzz around the contest.Adam Voges, the former Australian cricketer and head coach of the Perth Scorchers, recently spoke to WION about how it feels to be a part of something new for the BBL."We've already got a strong and passionate base of Indian cricket supporters back in Perth, and I’d love for our brand and history to be celebrated across India, as well. This is a fantastic opportunity to bring them closer to the Club, and to the state of Western Australia. We love engaging with cricket fans wherever they are in the world, and we're proud of the style of cricket we play. I think fans in Chennai, and across India, are going to enjoy what they see," said Voges. The Scorchers are also the defending BBL champions, and Voges also spoke about the expectations for the upcoming season, saying: "The Perth Scorchers are incredibly proud and excited to be making history to open the first-ever BBL match in Chennai. Expectations are high, and we have a strong team. I was recently in Chennai and the pitch is looking great, the mood is high. We’re looking forward to working together in Chennai to deliver a great win in December. We’re confident we can have another great season next year."Speaking on the occasion, Roger Cook, Premier of Western Australia, said: "Cricket provides a strong cultural connection between Australia and India, and Western Australia is proud to play a leading role in that relationship. The Perth Scorchers are an iconic Western Australian team and introducing that brand to millions of cricket fans in India creates valuable opportunities beyond the playing field. It helps raise awareness of Western Australia as a destination for events, tourism, investment and business. Every interaction builds familiarity and strengthens connections. India is one of WA's most important strategic partners, and initiatives like this provide an engaging way to deepen those relationships".

India survived a scare against Japan to win the one-off T20I on Tuesday (Sep 22) and claim the first-ever Suzuki Cup with a two-run win in Sano. The rain-affected contest saw overs being reduced to 5 overs per side from the full 20 overs, and India came out victorious after an early batting setback. Chasing a target of 33 runs, Japan, playing for the first time against India, failed to score the boundary needed on the last ball to win the match and managed 30 runs for the loss of three wickets. Japan's bowling performance, however, was exemplary against two-time T20 World Cup champions India.
Japan bowling shocks India batters in Suzuki Cup
After rain reduced the match to five overs per side, India won the toss and skipper Shreyas Iyer decided to bat first. The decision proved costly instantly, with dashing opener Abhishek Sharma getting out for a first-ball duck on the last ball of the first over. Abhishek's partner Sanju Samson (9 off 7 balls) was next to get out two balls later, and Ishan Kishan (3 off 6 balls) followed him back to the dressing room in the next over. Skipper Iyer scored 16 off 12 balls before getting out on the penultimate ball, as India scored 32/4 in 5 overs. Also Read - Asian Games 2026: India beat Sri Lanka in final to defend women's cricket goldChasing the target, Axar Patel bowled the first over for India as Japan scored only two runs and lost Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake (1) to a run-out. Washington Sundar bowled the next over and dismissed Ibrahim Takahashi (4), conceding six runs in the over. Ravi Bishnoi came next and gave away 10 runs as Japan dreamt of doing the unthinkable. In the fourth over, Sundar gave away seven runs in the first five balls but dismissed Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming (12) to tilt the match into India's favor once more.Axar Patel bowled the last over and gave away just five runs, defending the 8 runs needed by Japan, including denying the boundary off the last ball as India won the match by two runs.
What did the captains say after the match?
Speaking at the post-match presentation, India skipper Iyer said: "(The pitch) was turning square, was a very difficult wicket to bat on. We saw the openers as well, not being able to gauge the pace of the spin. I decided it's easy to take singles and doubles, interact with the batsman who came in with me. Decided I'll be playing on the merit of the ball. If the ball is turning and holding a bit, I'll nudge for singles and doubles... See I always keep saying five overs game, it can go anywhere. Attitude Japanese team showed today is impeccable. I'm sure they're on the right track, for us it was a great practice on the wicket."Japan skipper Kadowaki-Fleming added: "When it gets that tough, it gets a little tough to take. The fact that we were able to run the best team in the world to the last ball... Proud of the cricket group and broader community. The people working on this ground through the whole night, made this game happened. Proud of not only the team but the broader community. Anything is possible was the attitude. Axar, Bishnoi bowling on our wicket, we knew it was going to be a challenge, but at 6.5 RPO you know your mind wanders... A couple of moments will wander in our mind on long bus ride. It's a feeling of pride."

India, which recently won the women's T20 Asia Cup by beating Sri Lanka in the final, had also won the 2023 Asian Games gold medal in the event.
India batters dismantle Sri Lanka bowlers
Batting first, India openers Smriti Mandhana (79 off 45) and Shafali Verma (48 off 29) added 99 runs for the opening wicket before Verma was dismissed at the 10-over mark. Bowling veteran Wasim Akram was unhappy with the reception Pakistan’s emerging star Razaullah received upon his arrival in Pakistan. Pakistan lost to England 3-0 in the three-match Test series, and Razaullah, who made his Test debut in the final Test at Edgbaston, sparked some hope with his late blitz with the bat in the second innings. Although Razaullah smashed his career-best 81, including nine sixes, in his only Test appearance, he and Pakistan’s pace attack failed to defend the modest target as England completed the run chase and won the match and the series. Calling out the public celebrations and the kind of welcome he received, Akram said, ‘Pakistan has accepted mediocrity’. Akram asserted that rather than accepting airport fanfare, Razaullah and his teammates should have returned home quietly in shame for what his team has done in England. Fuming with Pakistan’s mindset and behaviour, Akram suggested that if Razaullah or his fans were that elated about his performance in the losing cause, they all should have celebrated inside closed doors, unlike how they did it grandly in public. Also read| 'Were you here to sell chickpeas?': Wasim Akram criticises Babar Azam's captaincy “Hide your face at least," Akram said at an event on Sunday. “Go and celebrate at your home. Let me get this straight: you may bring the best coach in the world, the best chairman in the world, but the players are from here; they are the same. There are no new players. Let’s talk about mindset: very talented. So, we got hammered by England- not lost, hammered. “So, he arrived in Islamabad with 5,000 people to welcome him. His whole village came to receive him with bouquets and garlands. This tells you the mindset. We have accepted mediocrity," he added. WATCH Razaullah's Welcome at Islamabad Airport -

India vs Japan, One-off T20I: When and where to watch live streaming in India?

India and Japan are set for a maiden yet historic face-off in a one-off T20I on Tuesday at the Sano International Stadium, with the Japanese captain Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming calling this a monumental feat for the country’s cricket. The match also fulfils a long-cherished dream for Japan Cricket Association (JCA) CEO Naoki Alex Miyaji, who led the effort to arrange the landmark encounter. “The CEO has had this dream for a long time,” Japan captain Kendel said on the eve of the match against a full-strength Indian team. “When news first came up that we were hosting the Asian Games, Naoki had been talking about the concept of having India here for a game. So, for it to turn into reality is extremely special for a lot of people involved, and as a men's team, we can't wait.” Also read| Asia Cup finalists India and Sri Lanka to fight for women’s Asian Games gold Reflecting on the JCA’s efforts to convince the BCCI for a one-off T20I against India ahead of their 2026 Asian Games campaign took some doing, on which Kendel said, “It's taken a massive effort from a lot of people involved to make it happen. Facing the three-time T20 World Cup champions will not only ignite excitement among local fans in Japan, but also inspire the country's next generation of young cricketers. “It's got the potential to accelerate the growth of cricket across the country,” remarks Kendel. “There's going to be more people here than ever before for a cricket match. And clearly the best quality players that we've ever had here as well.”
On Facing Bumrah, Abhishek
India is coming off a 3-0 T20I series win over Afghanistan, where opener Abhishek Sharma smashed a fifty and a hundred (108) — he scored off just 30 balls in the final match. Bumrah, who also returned to action, would have all eyes on him, with Japan’s men’s cricket team all but keen on rubbing shoulders with T20I greats. “It still does sound quite surreal to be hearing about them playing here in Japan. But the Japanese are not overawed by the might of the opposition. I can't guarantee any outcome, but what I can guarantee is that we will try our best. We'll compete, and hopefully, we'll give it our best shot,” Kendel said of Japan’s face-off against India in a chat with Cricbuzz.

England replaced Brendon McCullum as their red-ball head coach with another New Zealander - Stephen Fleming - arguably the best Kiwi skipper of all time. Although Fleming was not with England during their recent whitewash of Pakistan at home, the Kiwi player has his sights set on bigger things now.
