PAK vs SA 2nd Test: Simon Harmer spins Proteas to series-leveling win in Rawalpindi

Team India fought back in the ongoing second ODI against Australia in Adelaide to post a fighting 264 for nine in 50 overs. Following a shaky start (losing two wickets for 17 inside the seventh over), also including batting giant Virat Kohli’s rare twin duck in this series, the visiting side rode on Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer’s fifties and a late blitz from Axar Patel and the tail to give themselves a chance in this do-or-die match. For Australia, seamer Xavier Bartlett picked up three wickets for 39, but their best bowler was spinner Adam Zampa, who returned with four to his name in his ten overs. Australian captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Adelaide Oval, something his counterpart and Indian skipper, Shubman Gill, also admitted to choosing had he won the toss. The masterstroke did wonders early on as Bartlett dismissed Gill and Kohli in the same over, putting Team India’s back against the wall. Former captain Rohit struggled big time against Hazlewood, who perhaps bowled the best non-wicket-taking spell in recent ODI history, with his figures reading 0/29 in ten overs, including two maidens. Also read | IND vs AUS 2nd ODI: Virat Kohli’s rare duck fuels retirement rumours as netizens react to his ‘hand gesture’ Rohit and Iyer stitched over a hundred-run stand for the third wicket to put India’s innings back on track, but Zampa had other plans. Following the loss of four quick wickets, Axar and the tail helped India revive from a tricky situation and helped them cross the 250-run mark. Although the fans and perhaps the dressing room had minute hopes from Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh, they surprisingly did well to push the team total past 260.

With Australia already leading (1-0) in this three-match series, a win at the Adelaide Oval will see them seal the series, whereas, should India win, they will level it, with the SCG in Sydney to decide the outcome.

India posted a fighting 264 for nine in 50 overs in the second ODI in Adelaide. Bartlett and Zampa were their top performers.

However, what worried the Indian Cricket Team fans was Kohli’s hand gesture as he walked off the field straight to the pavilion. As he crossed the boundary rope, Kohli acknowledged the fans, who happened to cheer for him, with a hand gesture that hints at his potential retirement from international cricket. IND vs AUS 2nd ODI: Virat Kohli’s rare duck fuels retirement rumours as netizens react to his 'hand gesture'

In what is a rarest of the rare occasions in Virat Kohli’s ODI career, the Indian batting great got out on a successive duck in the ongoing second One-Dayer against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday (Oct 23). Coming off his first zero in ODIs in Australia in the previous tie in Perth, Kohli looked confident to return to form at his favourite batting venue in Adelaide, only for him to get trapped in front of the wicket on a four-ball duck off Xavier Bartlett. Having removed captain Shubman Gill earlier on the first ball of the seventh over, Bartlett got the better of the batting king to put India’s back against the wall. WATCH VIDEO -

For the second time in this ODI series, Kohli walked out to bat inside the Powerplay following Gill’s dismissal. Looking to find form and rhythm after Perth duck, Kohli beautifully let go of the first few balls before missing out playing the one that hit him in front of the wickets, with Bartlett getting the big fish. Marsh’s top-notch captaincy did wonders for the hosts, who put the visiting Indian Team on the back foot right away. What made things worse for the Men in Blue was how clueless former captain Rohit Sharma looked in the middle, with Josh Hazlewood troubling him throughout the first ten overs. Although he survived a few close calls, including an LBW appeal earlier, Rohit managed to keep his wicket, unlike Gill and Kohli. Meanwhile, Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Adelaide Oval. Coming off a win in the rain-hit series opener at the Optus Stadium, the Aussies made three changes to their playing XI – bringing in Alex Carey for Josh Philippe, Bartlett for Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa for Matthew Kuhnemann. Gill, on the other hand, stuck to the same XI, with Kuldeep Yadav’s absence being the biggest talking point.

Kohli's rare failure with the bat in this format is bound to cast doubts over his international future.

Rohit Sharma was replaced as ODI skipper before India's white-ball tour of Australia began. He played the first ODI in Perth on October 19 at his usual opening position but failed - scoring just eight runs of 14 balls. This was Rohit's first game in international cricket since Champions Trophy 2025 final which India had won in March earlier this year. Since the win, Rohit has retired from Test cricket and now plays only in 50-over format for India. He, however, seems to be in a bit of hot soup over his place in the team.
Jaiswal to replace Rohit in Adelaide?
Ahead of the second ODI in Adelaide on Thursday (Oct 23), young southpaw Yashasvi Jaiswal was seen having a long chat with head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI chief of selectors Ajit Agarkar. This could be an indication to gearing up Jaiswal for the slot of opening batter in the ODIs in the long run. Agarkar and Gambhir have already said that it would be unfair to youngsters confirm Rohit's place of the 2027 ODI World Cup which is still nearly two years away. Nonetheless, Jaiswal clearly has the attention from the people in position who can make him the ODI opener.

Abhishek Sharma was given opportunity in the T20Is when Rohit retired last year and he has done exceptionally well. Sanju Samson was given the role of opener alongside Sharma in the 20-over cricket but Shubman Gill, India's Test & ODI skipper as well as vice-captain in T20Is, is now back for that position.Gill also opens the batting in ODIs along with Rohit and seems like Jaiswal will be getting the former India skipper's place once he retires or thought of otherwise by the BCCI.

Harmer took 3-26 as Pakistan ended the third day on a precarious 94-4 -- just 23 runs ahead with six wickets and two days remaining on a spin-spiced Rawalpindi stadium pitch.

Simon Harmer grabbed three early wickets to push South Africa closer to a series-levelling victory over a faltering Pakistan in the second Test in Rawalpindi on Wednesday. Harmer took 3-26 as Pakistan ended the third day on a precarious 94-4 -- just 23 runs ahead with six wickets and two days remaining on a spin-spiced Rawalpindi stadium pitch. Pakistan's last hopes rest on Babar Azam, unbeaten on 49, and Mohammad Rizwan, 16 not out, as they strive to win the two-match series, having won the first Test by 93 runs in Lahore. South Africa piled up 404 runs after Senuran Muthusamy scored a career-best 89 not out and Kagiso Rabada posted his highest Test score of 71, giving the visitors a crucial 71-run lead. The home team scored 333 in their first innings. With their backs to the wall, Pakistan's second innings started disastrously as opener Imam-ul-Haq (nine) and skipper Shan Masood (nought) fell to Harmer with the score at 16. It became 16-3 when Rabada had Abdullah Shafique caught in the slips for six. Harmer returned for his second spell to dismiss Saud Shakeel, who was caught in the slips for 11 to end a resolute 44-run third wicket stand. Earlier, Asif Afridi became the oldest debutant to take a five or more wicket haul in Tests with figures of 6-79. His effort had South Africa struggling on 221-7 as Pakistan looked set for a lead, but home skipper Masood's decision to take the second new ball proved a big mistake. Muthusamy played an anchor role in helping to add 169 for the last two wickets before Asif ended the innings on the stroke of tea. Muthusamy defied the Pakistan spinners, hitting eight fours to improve on his previous highest score of 68 not out against Bangladesh at Chattogram last year. Marriott did so against the West Indies at The Oval in 1933 aged 37 years and 332 days. Like fellow left-armer Maharaj -- who took seven wickets for the visitors in Pakistan's 333 all out -- Asif used the dry conditions to maximum effect. With the turn on the Rawalpindi stadium pitch increasing considerably, Asif dismissed Kyle Verreynne caught behind by wicketkeeper Rizwan for 10 with the fourth ball of the day. Tristan Stubbs defied Pakistan's spinners for 256 minutes before a fastish delivery from Asif trapped him leg-before for 76. His knock was studded with six fours and a six. Asif completed his five-wicket haul by trapping Harmer leg-before for two while Noman Ali dismissed Marco Jansen in the same manner for 12. India batter Virat Kohli's comeback to international cricket in the first of three ODIs against Australia ended with an eight-ball duck. The batter was out trying to drive a ball outside off but the bounce caught him off guard. The manner of dismissal raised old questions about Kohli's impatient nature to cover drive the ball and getting out. He'll be looking to put the failure of Perth behind him when he takes the field in happy hunting ground Adelaide in second ODI on Thursday (Oct 23). Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar feels Kohli will 'come into his zone.'
Nayar backs Kohli to come into zone
“Whatever time I have spent with him, he knows how to play in one way only, with passion and aggression. He will back himself. There will be a lot of discussions about him playing deliveries outside the off-stump. He will go back and visualise. He will meditate and come into his zone,” Nayar said while talking to Star Sports. The venue of second ODI - Adelaide - is also Kohli's one of the mst favorite grounds with a stellar record for him across formats.
Kohli's record in Adelaide, Australia
Kohli's love with Adelaide is well documented. He came of age with his twin hundreds in the famous 2014 Test - his first as Indian Test skipper. In five Tests played at the venue, Kohli has scored 527 runs with three tons. In ODIs, Kohli has scored 244 runs in four matches with two hundreds and best of 107. In three T20Is at the venue, the former skipper has scored 204 runs with a best of 90 not out. With the upcoming ODI most probably going to be last at the venue, Kohli will surely like to sign off on a high.

Ex-India assistant coach Nayar says Kohli 'knows how to play one way only'

The India team will be back on familiar territory on Thursday (Oct 23) as they take on Australia in the second ODI at the Adelaide Oval. Having lost a rain-affected contest at Perth’s Optus Stadium, India will be looking for a response to keep their hopes alive in the ODI series.
