Star Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma has slipped from the top spot in the ICC Women’s T20I bowling rankings, following the latest update released on Tuesday (Jan 6). The off-spinner dropped to second place after Australia’s Annabel Sutherland regained the No. 1 position, edging ahead by a single rating point. Despite India completing a dominant 5–0 clean sweep against Sri Lanka, Deepti’s figures in the final T20I were not enough to keep her at the top. She returned with one wicket for 28 runs in the series decider, while Sutherland’s consistent performances helped her move ahead with 736 rating points, one more than Deepti. The Australian fast-bowling all-rounder had earlier reached the top spot in August 2025 before briefly losing it. This is the second time Deepti has been displaced from No. 1, with a similar situation occurring last year when Pakistan spinner Sadia Iqbal allowed Sutherland to take over the rankings. Also read | 'Easiest format': Sanjay Manjrekar’s strong take on Virat Kohli’s Test retirement
Harmanpreet gains advantage in batting rankings
While Deepti dropped a place, India still had positives in the latest update. Harmanpreet smashed 68 runs off 43 balls to guide India to a 15-run win and earn the Player of the Match award. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has once again questioned Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket, saying the star batter chose to walk away instead of fixing his flaws in the longest format. Manjrekar shared his views in a video posted on his official Instagram account, reacting to England’s Joe Root scoring his 41st Test century. Root’s latest milestone, according to Manjrekar, highlighted what Indian cricket lost when Kohli quit red-ball cricket. Virat Kohli, along with Joe Root, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson, was part of the famous ‘Fab Four’ in Test cricket. However, Kohli is the only one among them to step away from the format. Root, Smith and Williamson continue to score heavily in Tests across conditions. Also read | Meet top 5 batters fastest to 25,000 international runs “As Joe Root attains new heights in Test cricket, my mind goes to Virat Kohli,” Manjrekar said on Instagram. “He’s walked away from Tests, and it’s unfortunate that in the five years that he struggled before retiring, he didn’t quite put his heart and soul into finding out why he was averaging 31 for five years in Tests.” Manjrekar added that he would have understood Kohli’s decision if he had retired from all formats. What disappointed him, however, was Kohli continuing to play ODIs, which he called the 'easiest format' for a top-order batter.

Sanjay Manjrekar’s comments on Virat Kohli’s Test retirement have sparked fresh debate after Joe Root’s latest hundred. His strong words have fans talking again.

What disappointed him, however, was Kohli continuing to play ODIs, which he called the 'easiest format' for a top-order batter.

With the 20-team tournament starting in almost a month, the BCB has written to the ICC to move their league stage venues (from India to Sri Lanka), citing security concerns. Owing to the ongoing chaos in Bangladesh and regular attacks on the minorities, the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) directed the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release the only Bangladeshi player picked at the December 2025 player auction – seamer Mustafizur Rahman (for INR 9.2 crore), leading to widespread anger among the fans back home. Irked by BCCI’s call to release the cricketer, and more so for not providing a proper explanation behind it, the BCB held back-to-back meetings over the weekend, reverting with harsh calls, including deciding against travelling to India for the marquee ICC event. “You know that we, along with all the directors of the cricket board, held two meetings before taking this decision, and at this moment we do not feel secure sending our team to India to play the World Cup,” the BCB president Aminul Islam told reporters on Monday (Jan 5). “So, we wrote a letter to the ICC, and in the letter we clearly stated what we wanted to say. Because to us, security appeared to be a major concern, and that is what we are following. We have sent an email to the ICC, and we are expecting them to tell us to have a meeting with them soon, where we will express our concern," he added. He also stressed that BCB will decide on the next course of action depending on ICC’s reply to their venue change request. “But what our next step will be depends on the reply to the email we have sent. We do not know what feedback will come (from ICC), but the clauses we have given are within the MPO. We are not communicating with BCCI because this is an ICC event. We are communicating with the ICC,” he continued.
‘Bilateral and security concerns for an ICC event are two different things’
Last Friday, the BCB confirmed the home season for this year, including hosting India for the white-ball series in September. However, the developments over the weekend changed the dynamics, as the BCB feels 'unsafe' about sending its team to India for the T20 World Cup starting February 7. Now, amid the standoff, speculations of India being reluctant to tour Bangladesh (for this postponed series from 2025) have grown significantly. Commenting on its possibility, Aminul said bilaterals and (security concerns) around an ICC event are two different things. “Look, cricket between the two countries (the relationship between India and Bangladesh), like playing a bilateral series or playing in the World Cup, is one thing, and security concern is another matter. So for now, we are thinking about the World Cup issue (security).”

Bangladesh is scheduled to play their first three league matches in Kolkata and the final one in Mumbai.

‘Bilateral and security concerns for an ICC event are two different things’ Last Friday, the BCB confirmed the home season for this year, including hosting India for the white-ball series in September.

The Ashes is drawing to a close with two days done in ongoing last Test in Sydney. The banter between Australia and England players, however, refuses to calm down with the latest incident involving English skipper Ben Stokes and homeboy Marnus Labuschagne. Towards the end of day 2 (Jan 5), Stokes and Labuschagne were seen in an animated exchange which eventually ended with Stokes dismissing Labuschagne. Australia, nonetheless, were in a strong position at 166/2 with Travis Head batting at 91 in reply to England's 384 in the first innings.
Stokes-Labuschagne heated exchange on day 2 of Sydney Test
The moment came when Stokes was hit for two boundaries in 29th over of Aussie innings by Head. The origin of the altercation is not clear but Stokes appeared to use the 'F' word while walking back to his fielding position. He then came back and put his arm around Labuschagne with umpires also involved in the matter. Have a look at the video below:

Joe Root said he would love to return for another Ashes tour of Australia after his superb 160 in the fifth Test on Monday, with the English veteran showing few signs of slowing down. Root, the second-highest Test run-scorer behind India great Sachin Tendulkar, struck 15 fours in his 242-ball stay to help England post 384 in their first innings. Root will be 39 when England next tour Australia, and pundits believe this was likely his final farewell, with a salute to all corners of the ground when he walked off, reinforcing the impression. Root, the second-highest Test run-scorer behind India great Sachin Tendulkar, struck 15 fours in his 242-ball stay to help England post 384 in their first innings.

Joe Root said he would love to return for another Ashes tour of Australia after his superb 160 in the fifth Test on Monday, with the English veteran showing few signs of slowing down. The 35-year-old stroked his second century of the series in Sydney for his 41st Test hundred, level in third place on the all-time list with Australian great Ricky Ponting. But Root suggested that may not be the case. "But at no point has that (support) ever wavered, and that's never wavered whenever I've come out here on tour; it's been exceptional. And it's a way of saying thank you, really." Asked directly if he would be back in four years, Root replied: "Who knows? We'll see. I'd love to, but we'll see how things unfold in time." Shubman Gill, the newly-appointed Test captain, vows to better team India's Test records after they conceded two home series in the past 12 months, getting whitewashed by New Zealand and South Africa, respectively. Gill, who replaced Rohit Sharma as the Test skipper ahead of the UK tour this year, guided them to level the five-match series (2-2) before helping India crush the West Indies at home across two Tests. Later, against the Proteas, he suffered a neck injury in the first Test and was ruled out of competitive cricket for close to two months, with the team losing both matches. Considering India's current WTC standing (sixth place with four wins and as many losses), Gill has informally spoken with the BCCI, offering his advice of having a 15-day preparatory camp before every series, as per a Times of India (TOI) report. While having those ahead of the marquee away tours was always part of the discussion before and after India’s away tours lately, considering their records in SENA countries, staging those camps ahead of the home matches would only boost their chances of maintaining dominance in favourable conditions. Also read | After Pakistan, Bangladesh want its T20 WC matches to be staged outside India “Gill was very clear that the team needed better preparation before going into a Test series. Also, even those named for the two-match series against South Africa had just four days (following the away white-ball series against Australia) to return to Test rhythm. Meanwhile, those close to the information revealed that the BCCI is impressed with Gill’s roadmap to success and the clarity he brings as the Test captain. “Gill is showing assertive qualities now. The Test and ODI teams are Gill’s. It is important for him to have a bigger say,” the unnamed source added. However, considering the packed international calendar, the BCCI may not be able to stage a 15-day preparatory camp every time, looking to utilise the coaching staff and facilities better at the Centre of Excellence (CoE). “There may be instances where Gambhir will be busy with white-ball teams even as there may be a Test series approaching. The Board may use the services of CoE cricket head VVS Laxman to organise red-ball camps,” the source said.
