For Jadeja, this is a homecoming of sorts. He was part of the Rajasthan Royals squad during the early years of the IPL and played a role in their title-winning campaign in 2008 under Shane Warne. Now 37, the experienced all-rounder brings leadership maturity to a team that is rebuilding. Jadeja has prior captaincy experience as well. He led Chennai Super Kings during the 2022 IPL season and has been part of multiple championship-winning teams with CSK. His calm approach and game awareness make him a reliable option to guide a relatively young RR squad. Players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag are seen as future leaders, but the franchise may prefer Jadeja’s experience to steady the ship for now. With IPL 2026 approaching and the auction already done, Rajasthan Royals’ next big decision could well be naming their new captain. And if the social media hint is anything to go by, Ravindra Jadeja may soon be wearing the captain’s armband in pink.

Shubman Gill scored heavily for India in the red-ball series against England and later returned to the T20I squad during the Asia Cup 2025, where he was also named vice-captain. However, after his comeback, Gill struggled to make big scores in T20Is and did not reach a single half-century in the format. As a result, he was eventually left out of India’s T20 World Cup squad. Speaking on the ICC Review about Gill’s snub, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting said that he was surprised by Gill’s exclusion from the team. “I couldn’t believe that. I mean, I know his recent form hasn’t been great in white-ball cricket. The last time that I really saw much of him play was the Test series against England in the UK, where he batted as well as I’ve ever seen anybody bat. I think, one, I’m surprised, but two, it just shows the depth of Indian cricket,” Ponting said on ICC Review. “If you can think that someone as good as Shubman Gill doesn’t get picked in a World Cup squad, then it goes to show how many good players they do have,” he added. Also Read - Vipers vs Emirates, ILT20 Final: When and where to watch match live streaming? Since his return during the Asia Cup, Gill has played 15 T20I innings and scored 291 runs at an average of 24.25 and a strike rate of 137.26. Desert Vipers vs MI Emirates, ILT20 Final: When and where to watch match live streaming in India?

Former England captain Michael Vaughan, current Test vice-captain Harry Brook and multi-time Ashes winner with Australia Jason Gillespie – all Test cricket lovers - shared their views on bad light causing interruptions during a day’s play. A similar sight was on display during the first day of the final Ashes Test at the SCG in Sydney, when bad light and later rain abruptly ended proceedings. Although Brook admitted waiting for that decision to come at some point late on day one, Vaughan and Gillespie need a shift in mindset towards Test cricket. Earlier, Stokes won the toss and elected to bat first, with England losing their top three inside the first session. Joe Root and Brook, the top two-ranked Test batters, began doing the recovery work and did well, adding 154 and counting for the fourth wicket. Both struck respective fifties, with Brook ending the day as England’s highest scorer (78 off 92 balls). Meanwhile, just when both looked like taming the Aussie quicks with momentum on their side, bad light interrupted play just 15 minutes before the scheduled tea. The record attendance of 49,574 - the highest for a Test at the SCG since 1975-76, could only watch 45 overs being bowled, with England scoring 211 for three. Later, light showers took over the SCG before the play was finally abandoned just after 5 PM local time – half an hour before the scheduled close of play, with the crowd booing the officials out of the ground. "From what I've seen in terms of the rain, the light and the conditions in the last hour or so, I think we've probably sawn off the public, who have paid their money in the ground today by a couple of hours at least," Vaughan, the former England captain, said on BBC's Test Match Special. "Through our time watching Test match cricket, this is the one format that we keep talking about [how] we need to do something to make sure that we're protecting it. "In T20 cricket, you play in this. Test cricket is the one format that we do everything we possibly can to get off the pitch. The other two formats, we do everything we possibly can to get on the pitch. I just don't understand why we don't have that same mindset in Test match cricket,” he continued. Sharing similar sentiments, his former on-field foe Gillespie said (on ABC Radio), “Our game shoots itself in the foot time and time and time again.”
Brook could predict this
Speaking of rain interruptions and bad light and how it impacted proceedings on day one, Brook said, "We could hardly see the ball when I was batting at the end. Me and Rooty just said to [the umpires], 'It's so dark out here'. The Aussie boys were saying, 'Are we going off?' so everybody was pretty much in the same boat. It was dark, and then obviously we had that rain, so we were just sat around waiting for it to be called off, really. "We kind of knew that it was going to rain today, and obviously, we came off for bad light. At that point, we knew the rain was going to come,” he continued.

Frustrations piled up as rain interruption and bad light abruptly ended proceedings on day one at the SCG.

Three-time IPL champion Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have officially released Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the IPL 2026 season following a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The IPL franchise confirmed the development through an official statement, making it clear that the decision was not taken by the team but was carried out after instructions from the league’s governing body.
KKR releases official statement
Mustafizur had been signed by KKR for Rs 9.2 crore but will not now feature in the upcoming season. In their statement, Kolkata Knight Riders said, “Kolkata Knight Riders confirms that BCCI/IPL, as the regulator of IPL, has instructed it to release Mustafizur Rahman from the squad ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The release has been carried out following due process and consultations, upon the instruction of the Board of Control of Cricket in India. BCCI will allow Kolkata Knight Riders a replacement player in line with IPL regulations, and further details will be communicated in due course.” Also read | India vs New Zealand ODI rivalry: Head-to-head record, top run-scorers, wicket-takers and more

The franchise also confirmed that they will be allowed to sign a replacement player as per IPL rules, with more clarity expected in the coming days. Mustafizur Rahman is one of Bangladesh’s most experienced fast bowlers and has been a regular name in the IPL over the years. Known for his cutters and variations, the left-arm pacer has played for five different franchises in the league and has often been used as a specialist death-overs bowler. In his IPL career so far, Mustafizur has played 60 matches and picked up 65 wickets at an economy rate of 8.13. His experience and ability to bowl in pressure situations made him a valuable option for KKR, especially with the season approaching fast. His release could come as a setback for the three-time IPL champions, who will now need to rethink their bowling plans. With the auction cycle and squad balance in mind, the choice of replacement will be crucial for Kolkata Knight Riders as they prepare for IPL 2026. Meanwhile, the move has also raised questions about player availability and administrative decisions ahead of the season, with more clarity expected from the BCCI in the near future.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has strongly criticised the BCCI after Kolkata Knight Riders released Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the IPL 2026 season, calling the move unfair and deeply troubling. Tharoor questioned why a professional cricketer was being punished for political developments in his country and warned against mixing sport with politics. KKR terminated Mustafizur’s contract after receiving instructions from the BCCI earlier this week. The move came amid growing tension after reports of violence against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh, including the recent killing of a Hindu man. Also read | India vs New Zealand ODI rivalry: Head-to-head record, top run-scorers, wicket-takers and more
Tharoor questions BCCI decision
Reacting to the decision, Tharoor took to the social media platform X and expressed strong disagreement. He said it was wrong to single out an individual player for issues beyond his control. Tharoor also raised a sharp question, asking whether the BCCI would have taken the same step if the player involved had been someone else, pointing towards the danger of religion-based decisions in sport. He warned that such actions could set a poor example and harm the spirit of the game.
Rising concerns over attacks in Bangladesh
The controversy has come at a time when rights groups have reported a rise in attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh. According to a report by the Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities, at least 71 incidents linked to blasphemy allegations were recorded between June and December 2025. These incidents reportedly included mob violence, arrests, damage to homes, and even fatal attacks across several districts. One such incident involved a Hindu businessman, Khokan Chandra, who survived a brutal attack on New Year’s Eve. He was beaten, stabbed, and set on fire by a mob before managing to escape by jumping into a nearby pond. He is currently in critical condition at a local hospital. India has also raised concerns over the situation in Bangladesh, describing it as a period of continued hostility towards minorities. However, Tharoor’s comments have shifted focus back to cricket, with many questioning whether players should face consequences for political and social unrest in their home countries.
