The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in search of Rahul Dravid's successor as India's head coach is up for grabs. The former Indian captain's extended contract ends in June. The last date for applying for the top post isMay 27. Hence, the board has reportedly approached several big names such as Stephen Fleming, Gautam Gambhir, Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, etc. to come on board. However, many are declining the offer, mainly due to India's hectic schedule and the pressure involved with the job.
Langer, who coached Australia from2018-2022, recently confirmed that he will not be applying for the job. The former Aussie opener, who joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as their head coach for IPL 2024, declined the prospect of being the next India coach as he feels the job isn't for him at the moment. Further, herevealed that chat with KL Rahul, the LSG captain, also helped his decision as he understood thecomplexity of the job.
Speaking on BBC’s Stumped podcast, Langer told, "You never say never. And the pressure of doing it in India… I was talking to KL Rahuland he said, ‘You know, if you think there’s pressure and politics in an IPL team, multiply that by a thousand, [that’s] coaching India. That was a good bit of advice, I guess."

Langer further added, "It would be an amazing job, (but) I have (to put myself out of contention). I also know that it’s an all-encompassing role, and having done it for four years with the Australian team, honestly, it’s exhausting. And that’s the Australian job."
Meanwhile, LSG failed to qualify for this year's IPL playoffs despite a good start to their campaign. Under Langer, Lucknow ended seventh with seven wins from 14 games.
Talking about the India coaching job, many big names have pulled out of contention citing constant travel and the hectic cricketing schedule. Dravid, the current Indian coach, will part ways with the senior men's team post the forthcoming 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA in June.
