'No one was agreeing to it,' says India batter Shreyas Iyer on citing back issues to miss domestic cricket

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer has said that nobody agreed with him when he raised his back issues earlier in the year. Notably, Iyer missed some Ranji Trophy (India's premier domestic tournament) matches and subsequently lost the central contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
"I was definitely struggling after the World Cup in the longer format," Iyer said on the eve of the IPL final against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Chennai. "When I raised my concern, no one was agreeing to it," he added.

"But at the same time the competition is with myself. When the IPL was approaching all I wanted to see was that I've put my best foot forward and whatever planning and strategising we [KKR] did before it, basically if we could execute it to the best of our abilities, we would have been in a great spot - and that's where we are right now," noted the KKR skipper.
Iyer had returned to India ODI team in Asia Cup prior to ODI World Cup 2023 after recovering from the back spams. After the ODI WC, he was selected in India's squad for England for the two Tests. He had complained of back spasms ahead of the second Test but was cleared to play.
Iyer was later dropped from the last three Tests against England but skipped the Ranji matches for his team Mumbai citing back spasms. He later featured in the final for Mumbai but reportedly spent two days off the field due to back issues. A letter of warning was issued by BCCI secretary Jay Shah for not prioritising IPL over domestic cricket.

As for IPL, Iyer took over the captaincy after missing out the last season. Knight Riders finished atop the points table after the league stage with nine wins, two no results and only three losses in 14 games.
