Sri Lanka are set to host New Zealand in a rare six-day Test in September as the World Test Championship (WTC) final race intensifies. As announced on Friday (Aug 23), the rare six-day Test will be played out in September after the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed the decision. The series will consist of two Test matches with both matches taking place in Galle with the opening match starting from September 18.

In a rare event, due to the presidential elections in the country, the Test match starting on September 18 will have a one-day break on September 21. This means the match will retain its original five-day schedule but will extend to a sixth day (if there is no result in the opening five days).
The series came as a surprise announcement for many which was not included in the initial International Cricket Council (ICC) calendar. The two-match Test series will have huge bearings on the WTC standings with both teams in search of important points. New Zealand won the inaugural edition of the WTC in 2021 beating India in the final.

The WTC final in 2021 was also the last time a Test match was played on the sixth day as it consisted of a reserve day, which was utilised.
The series will be Sri Lanka’s first on home turf since they beat India in the ODI series 2-0 and will play New Zealand after returning back from the England tour.
Currently, they are facing England in the opening Test in Manchester and got off to a decent start having been bowled out for 236 in their first innings. At the time of writing, England were 284/6 and were leading by 48 runs in the opening Test.
