Sri Lanka Women beat India Women by eight wickets in the Women's Asia Cup final on Sunday (Jul 28) to lift their maiden trophy. Chasing a decent 166, skipper Chamari Athapaththu (61) Harshitha Samarawickrama (69 not out) guided the Island country to win in the penultimate over.

This was Sri Lanka's highest successful chase in T20I as well. The hosts, however, started badly as they lost the first wicket in second over of the chase with just seven runs on the board.

Athapaththu and Samarawickrama then added 87 runs for the second wicket before Deepti Sharma clean bowled the Lankan skipper.

Kavisha Dilhari (30 off 16) then joined Samarawickrama on the crease as the duo added unbeaten 73 runs for the third wicket to take their team home.

Sri Lanka also became only the third team after India and Bangladesh to win the regional tournament.

Samarawickrama was named Player of the Match for her innings and thanked her coach at the post match presentation for her match-winning innings.

"I am very happy that I scored in this game. I had failed in the past but very happy today. When Chamari was out, I wanted to play positive cricket with Kavisha and it worked out well in the end. I am very thankful to the coach that he gave me the freedom to play," she said.

India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur acknowledged that her team made a lot of fumbles in the match and said: "It was a decent total. Sri Lanka batted really well and didn't make it easy for us. There are a lot of areas we can improve upon and we will remember this day. Sri Lanka have been playing good cricket for quite some time. Congrats to them and credit goes to them."
