It was a chaotic day at the office for India’s legendary batter Virat Kohli after he was dismissed in a freak manner in the final session of Day 2 in the ongoing first Test match against Bangladesh. Batting in the second innings on Day 2, Virat was dismissed for 17 off 37 after stand-in umpire Richard Kettleborough deemed him lbw. However, replays suggested that Virat had hit the ball with his bat before the ball hit his pads while he did not opt for the Decision Review System (DRS).
On the second ball of the 20th over, Virat was deemed lbw by Kettleborough which saw the Indian batter out. However, his strange call to not take DRS came as a surprise for many including Rohit Sharma. Replays clearly showed that he had hit the ball before it hit the pads raising eyebrows. Rohit who was dismissed for 5 earlier and sitting in the dressing room was furious and discontent with the decision.
On the flip side, Kettleborough was seen giving a broad smile as he realised his mistake of giving him out. The Englishman has been an eccentric figure in India’s ICC matches while the Men in Blue have been on the receiving end.
After starting Day 2 on 339/6, it was not long before Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for 86 as he failed to add to his tally. Soon Ravinchadran Ashwin was dismissed for 113 off 133 as he helped India 376. Debutant Akash Deep added 17 runs to his tally while Jasprit Bumrah scored 7 with the bat. Mohammed Siraj bagged a duck to end the Indian innings.
Hasan Mahmud on the other hand became the first Bangladesh bowler to scalp a five-fer on Indian soil. Taskin Ahmed bagged three wickets while there were wickets a piece for Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
In response to Indian innings, Bangladesh were all over the place with Shakib Al Hasan being the only significant contributor with 32 runs. In 47.1 overs they were bowled out for 149 with Jasprit Bumrah ending at 50/4 while Siraj, Akash Deep and Ravindra Jadeja bagged two wickets each.
India would close the day at 81/3 in 23 overs with Shubman Gill (33) and Rishabh Pant (12) in the middle.
