BYD prepares to launch second 7,000-car carrier to fuel its global EV expansion

BYD partners with Huawei

BYD, China's leading electric vehicle manufacturer, is preparing to launch its second car carrier vessel, marking another significant step in its ambitious global expansion strategy. This new ship is part of a larger fleet of seven vessels that BYD plans to deploy over the next two years, underscoring the company's commitment to establishing a strong presence in the international automotive market.

The new car carrier, named "BYD Hefei," was recently unveiled by Guangzhou Shipyard International, BYD's shipbuilder, during an undocking ceremony. Before it officially enters service, the vessel will undergo a series of rigorous tests to ensure its readiness for ocean transport.

With a capacity to carry 7,000 vehicles, the BYD Hefei represents a substantial increase in BYD's shipping capabilities. This vessel is particularly noteworthy as it is the first car carrier that BYD will own outright. In contrast, the company's first vessel, "Explorer No 1," which was introduced in January and has already completed voyages to Spain, Germany, and Brazil, was built by China International Marine Containers (CIMC) for BYD's partner, Zodiac Shipping.

The specifications of the BYD Hefei are impressive, measuring 199.9 meters in length, with a beam of 38 meters and a design draft of 9 meters. Guangzhou Shipyard has revealed that this vessel is the first of two they are constructing for BYD, signaling the beginning of a long-term partnership between the two companies.

BYD's decision to invest in its own fleet of car carriers comes at a time when the company is experiencing remarkable growth. In August, BYD broke its new energy vehicle (NEV) sales record for the third consecutive month, selling 373,082 NEVs, which include both electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Of this total, 145,627 were all-electric vehicles, pushing BYD's total EV sales for 2024 over the one million mark.

The company's international expansion is also gaining momentum. BYD's overseas sales reached 31,451 units in August, representing a 26 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2023. With the addition of new car carriers and plans to increase local production in key markets such as Turkey, Pakistan, Mexico, and Brazil, BYD is poised to capture a larger share of the global automotive market.

BYD has already established itself as one of the top-selling EV brands in Brazil, Mexico, and Southeast Asia. However, the company anticipates a significant surge in its overseas sales over the coming years, driven by its expanded shipping capacity and localised production strategies.
