As a gesture of goodwill, Russia will transfer 23 seriously wounded Ukrainian servicemen to Kyiv.

White House says Hamas chose war by refusing to release hostages

Canadian entrepreneur and actor Jasmine Mooney, popular for her role in American Pie Presents, said that she was detained for almost two weeks in "inhumane" conditions by the US border authorities over an incomplete visa.&nbsp;
Mooney was detained on March 3 in San Diego, California, as her work visa to the US was reportedly revoked in November 2024 while traveling from Vancouver to Los Angeles, and she was attempting to file a new application.
Mooney was detained at the San Ysidro border crossing between Mexico and San Diego, the busiest land border crossing in the world, her mother, Alexis Eagles, said. &nbsp;

Canadian entrepreneur and actor Jasmine Mooney, popular for her role in American Pie Presents, said that she was detained for almost two weeks in "inhumane" conditions by the US border authorities over an incomplete visa. Mooney was detained on March 3 in San Diego, California, as her work visa to the US was reportedly revoked in November 2024 while traveling from Vancouver to Los Angeles, and she was attempting to file a new application. <h2>Israel plans to move forward with Gaza op</h2>
Israel has a concrete plan "to move forward" with its military campaign in Gaza, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel.&nbsp;
The official further said that if Hamas agrees to go back to "genuine negotiation", Israel will go back to "genuine talks" and will stop the offensive.&nbsp;
"At the moment, we&rsquo;re left without any choice," the official added.&nbsp;
Another Israeli official told an Israeli newspaper that Israel's goal in the renewed air campaign in Gaza is to push Hamas to agree to the original "Witkoff proposal" for hostage talks.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Without small releases of hostage and without games, the goal is to get everyone out,&rdquo; the official said.
&ldquo;Israel waited three weeks for Hamas to begin serious talks on the Witkoff outline,&rdquo; the official added. &ldquo;That didn&rsquo;t happen.&rdquo;

Although, no evidence has been found against the 22-year-old so far, police have confiscated Riibe's passport and kept him in a hotel.&nbsp;
"If he wants to leave the hotel, he cannot do that freely, but with police. His passport is seized despite not being officially charged," Riibe's lawyer, Beatriz Santana, told the NBC News.&nbsp;

Tensions have been mounting in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, between forces allied to Kiir and Machar, threatening to undermine a fragile peace-sharing agreement.
"The violence is putting already vulnerable communities at greater risk and forcing the suspension of life-saving services," Anita Kiki Gbeho, an official with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in South Sudan said in a statement.
On Monday, an air strike by the South Sudanese government in Nasir County killed at least 20 people, including children, area commissioner James Gatluak told AFP.
OCHA said 10,000 of the displaced had crossed into Ethiopia.
It added that 23 humanitarian workers had also been forced to leave the region and a cholera treatment unit in Nasir closed.
"I urge all actors to allow humanitarians to safely reach those in need, especially women, children and the elderly," Gbeho said in the statement.
Last week, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported 1,300 cholera cases in South Sudan's Akobo County, located in the Upper Nile region.
The fighting threatens a 2018 peace deal between Kiir and Machar, who fought a five-year civil war that killed some 400,000 people.
Kiir's allies have accused Machar's forces of fomenting unrest in Nasir County in league with the White Army, a loose band of armed youths from the vice-president's Nuer ethnic community.
Tensions spiked earlier this month when an estimated 6,000 White Army combatants overran a military encampment in Nasir.
An attempted rescue by the United Nations led to the deaths of a UN helicopter pilot and senior South Sudanese general, among others.

Clashes in South Sudan displace 50,000: UN

Is the famous American Green Card turning red? Or is that a part of the fifty shades of grey that has become the hallmark of US immigration laws? The answer is not quite blowing in the wind. It is clear as day that under President Donald Trump and his belligerent right-wing administration, very little is left to the imagination. But then, there is something called the letter of the law. Here is where it is becoming increasingly evident that even if you are a legal alien in the US of A, perhaps, even a legal local, there is little to stop law enforcers from violating the law. I want to call this &ldquo;legal stalking,&rdquo; taking a pick from some Indian journalists who describe as &ldquo;legal terrorism&rdquo; the practice of some entities to stop the publication or broadcast of some content by invoking libel laws to erect roadblocks. It is easy for women to understand stalking: there is somebody who hovers close to you or walks steadily behind with snooping eyes as if nothing is abnormal, but there is somebody out to get you. It feels like that.

Official stalking is only the latest from what could be seen as a key part of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) toolkit: You have administrative powers to breathe down the necks of those you do not like. Who these people are can be of any hue: from a country you suspect, a race or nationality you are not comfortable with, a legal status you do not respect, a cause that goes against your own, a political party that you defeated, or an ideology you do not support (though permitted under the US Constitution). The latest, and possibly the most controversial among a series of actions from the Trump administration is its way of dealing with US Green Card holders, who are eligible for US citizenship but have chosen to not use the facility. The net seems to include some other usually convenient visa categories that come pretty close to Green Cards, such as the H-1B visa (long-term resident work permit) or the F1 visa (for non-immigrant international students). Attorneys are reported to be advising clients with such visas not to leave the US because American consulates are causing delays in stamping of visas in home countries. Other constricting actions include secondary inspection of permits including &ldquo;extreme vetting&rdquo; and detention at US airports on the return of such visa or Green Card holders.

This is what I call immigrant-stalking, including in its sweep anybody who fits into the current state of visitor profiling favoured by the Trump administration. Think of this as the opposite of the old rock hit Hotel California that ends with &ldquo;You can check out anytime you like/but you can never leave&rdquo;. Under America&rsquo;s new-normal regime, &ldquo;You sure have the permission to return/but they may never let you in!&rdquo; You only have to look back at various measures Trump and his cohort have imposed or talked about since taking power &ndash; or even during the presidential election campaign that preceded the White House diktats -- to see a distinct xenophobic pattern.
Recent efforts to discourage immigration include potentially imposing travel bans on visitors from as many as 43 countries to veiled threats held out to students like India&rsquo;s Ranjani Srinivasan, who &ldquo;self-deported&rdquo; under administrative snooping because she allegedly supported the militant Hamas group. All that has been evident is that the 37-year-old PhD scholar took part in a democratic protest on Palestine permitted under US law.

The &ldquo;red list&rdquo; for a planned travel ban includes citizens of not just usual suspects such as Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, and Syria, but even peaceful Bhutan, on the ground that data reported a surge in Bhutanese visa violations. The country&rsquo;s proximity to China may be a factor.
Red-flag measures include mass deportation of undocumented immigrants; suspension of admission of refugees fleeing persecution; closure of entry of individuals from crisis-hit regions like Haiti, Venezuela and Ukraine; and a proposal to create a registry for undocumented immigrants -- with potential penalties. One White House order calls for &ldquo;detaining, to the maximum extent authorized by law, aliens apprehended on suspicion of violating Federal or State law, until such time as they are removed from the United States.&rdquo;
Read that again: Suspicion is enough; conviction is not imperative or necessary. Law enforcement has now taken the place of justice authorised by an independent judiciary after due process.
White House is not exactly white anymore, unless you swap the colour of purity with the preferred colour of skin. This is not a mere pushback from the DEI (Diversity-Equity-Inclusion) of the Democrats, but a virtual 180-degree turn. The Green Card is flashing red signals, while various shades of visitors and residents sing the American blues. This is not quite the rainbow that wannabe US citizens were chasing.

It is clear as day that under President Donald Trump and his belligerent right-wing administration, very little is left to the imagination. But then, there is something called the letter of the law. Here is where it is becoming increasingly evident that even if you are a legal alien in the US of A, perhaps, even a legal local, there is little to stop law enforcers from violating the law. I want to call this “legal stalking,” taking a pick from some Indian journalists who describe as “legal terrorism” the practice of some entities to stop the publication or broadcast of some content by invoking libel laws to erect roadblocks. It is easy for women to understand stalking: there is somebody who hovers close to you or walks steadily behind with snooping eyes as if nothing is abnormal, but there is somebody out to get you. It feels like that. Who these people are can be of any hue: from a country you suspect, a race or nationality you are not comfortable with, a legal status you do not respect, a cause that goes against your own, a political party that you defeated, or an ideology you do not support (though permitted under the US Constitution). The latest, and possibly the most controversial among a series of actions from the Trump administration is its way of dealing with US Green Card holders, who are eligible for US citizenship but have chosen to not use the facility. The net seems to include some other usually convenient visa categories that come pretty close to Green Cards, such as the H-1B visa (long-term resident work permit) or the F1 visa (for non-immigrant international students). Attorneys are reported to be advising clients with such visas not to leave the US because American consulates are causing delays in stamping of visas in home countries. Other constricting actions include secondary inspection of permits including “extreme vetting” and detention at US airports on the return of such visa or Green Card holders. Under America’s new-normal regime, “You sure have the permission to return/but they may never let you in!” You only have to look back at various measures Trump and his cohort have imposed or talked about since taking power – or even during the presidential election campaign that preceded the White House diktats -- to see a distinct xenophobic pattern. Recent efforts to discourage immigration include potentially imposing travel bans on visitors from as many as 43 countries to veiled threats held out to students like India’s Ranjani Srinivasan, who “self-deported” under administrative snooping because she allegedly supported the militant Hamas group. All that has been evident is that the 37-year-old PhD scholar took part in a democratic protest on Palestine permitted under US law. The country’s proximity to China may be a factor. Red-flag measures include mass deportation of undocumented immigrants; suspension of admission of refugees fleeing persecution; closure of entry of individuals from crisis-hit regions like Haiti, Venezuela and Ukraine; and a proposal to create a registry for undocumented immigrants -- with potential penalties. One White House order calls for “detaining, to the maximum extent authorized by law, aliens apprehended on suspicion of violating Federal or State law, until such time as they are removed from the United States.” Read that again: Suspicion is enough; conviction is not imperative or necessary. Law enforcement has now taken the place of justice authorised by an independent judiciary after due process. White House is not exactly white anymore, unless you swap the colour of purity with the preferred colour of skin. This is not a mere pushback from the DEI (Diversity-Equity-Inclusion) of the Democrats, but a virtual 180-degree turn. The Green Card is flashing red signals, while various shades of visitors and residents sing the American blues. This is not quite the rainbow that wannabe US citizens were chasing. According to the email, they were attacked by one of the members, who is reportedly threatening to repeat the assault. The accused reportedly also sexually assaulted one of the members. The scientists are now pleading to be rescued.&nbsp;
The Sunday Times, which saw the email, quoted the email as saying, "Regrettably, [his] behaviour has escalated to a point that is deeply disturbing. Specifically, he physically assaulted [X]."
The unnamed researcher added that the actions have created "an environment of fear and intimidation" at the base.&nbsp;
"I remain deeply concerned about my own safety, constantly wondering if I might become the next victim,&rdquo; the researcher added.
They are demanding urgent action for their safety, saying that the person's behaviour is turning "increasingly egregious".&nbsp;

Dion George, South Africa&rsquo;s environment minister, said that he would reach out to the team to understand the gravity of the situation. Talking to The Sunday Times, George said that the situation at the Antarctic base is similar to that of astronauts in space. They have nowhere to run or hide.
Detailing the incident, he said, "There was a verbal altercation between the team leader and this person. Then it escalated and then that person did physically assault the leader. You can imagine what it&rsquo;s like, it is close quarters and people do get cabin fever. It can be very disorientating."

"These designated areas are considered dangerous combat zones... For your own safety, you must evacuate immediately to the known shelters in western Gaza City&nbsp;and those in Khan Yunis," the post said.
