A Unesco report released on Friday (Mar 21) noted that climate change and some human activities are causing "unprecedented changes" to mountains and glaciers, threatening access to fresh water and food supplies for more than two billion people.&nbsp;
World Water Development Report 2025 report revealed that more than 1 billion people live in mountainous regions and their food production is dependent on mountain waters, melting snow and glaciers. The glacier melt, decreased snow cover and increased permafrost thaw would lead to erratic water flow, hence disrupting the agriculture practices.&nbsp;

Another Unicef report noted that in the Himalayas, Karakoram and Hindu Kush mountain ranges of South Asia, the pace is even faster than the global average.&nbsp;
"Experts estimate that 80 per cent of the region's glaciers will disappear by the start of the next century. That loss would mean a dramatic reduction in the amount of water available for drinking, growing food and combatting disease," the report said.&nbsp;

Joel Le Scouarnec, the former surgeon who has been on trial for sexually abusing hundreds of his young patients, most under the age of 15 has confessed to his crimes, said one of his lawyers on Thursday (March 10).
The 74-year-old former surgeon has been on trial since March in what is one of France's largest child sex abuse cases.
<h2>'Duty to tell the truth'</h2>
Le Scouarnec, during the trial on Thursday, speaking behind closed doors, admitted guilt for all 299 of his victims. The disgraced former surgeon said "I have a duty to tell the truth," his lawyer Maxime Tessier told AFP.

"I asked him if he agreed that the 299 charges were (criminal) offences and he said: 'Yes'," added the lawyer.
Tessier said that he "asked the court to record in the minutes of the proceedings that Mr Le Scouarnec had admitted his guilt for the 299 charges".
Frederique Giffard, a lawyer representing around 15 civil parties lauded the admission of guilt and noted that it was "a crucial step in allowing victims to move on, and it is good that it has happened at this stage of the trial".

"Today, after two and a half years of captivity in Afghanistan, Delta Airlines mechanic George Glezmann is on his way to be reunited with his wife, Aleksandra," Rubio said in a statement.

The prisoner release reflects "Afghanistan's readiness to genuinely engage all sides, particularly the United States of America, on the basis of mutual respect and interests", a foreign ministry statement said.
The US delegation was the first from Washington since US President Donald Trump took office in January, foreign ministry spokesman Hafiz Zia Ahmad told AFP.
Contacts between the two sides since the Taliban returned to power in 2021 has usually taken place in third countries.

The US agents then found messages about how the scientists were treated under the Trump administration, which the source said "showed hatred towards the US president and could be qualified as terrorism".
The officials confiscated the scientist's equipment and sent him back to Europe on March 10.&nbsp;

US clarifies Tulsi Gabbard’s ‘misleading and damaging’ remark on Bangladesh

Iranian authorities have released French citizen Olivier Grondeau, detained since October 2022 on security charges, and he has returned to France, President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday.
Grondeau, 34, "is free and with his loved ones", Macron posted on X.
He added that "our mobilisation will not weaken" to ensure the release of two other French citizens still detained by Iran in what Paris views as state hostage-taking.
Grondeau arrived in France on Monday evening after an almost 900-day ordeal, the Elysee Palace and a diplomatic source told AFP.&nbsp;
No further details on the circumstances of Grondeau's release were made available.&nbsp;
Grondeau, who is from Montpellier in the south of France, remains in hospital undergoing a battery of tests, having been severely weakened in recent months, particularly psychologically, a government source told AFP, asking not to be named.
"It is a great joy to have Olivier back since he is innocent of all charges and has always belonged among us," his French lawyer, Chirinne Ardakani, told AFP.
The other two French nationals are Cecile Kohler, a teacher, and her partner, Jacques Paris, who were detained in May 2022. They are accused of seeking to stir up labour protests, accusations their families have denied.
Western countries have for years accused Iran of detaining their nationals on trumped-up charges in a policy of state hostage-taking to use them as bargaining chips to extract concessions.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot posted a picture of a smiling Grondeau on a plane returning home.
"Held hostage in Iran for 887 days, he has been reunited with his family, loved ones, and his country. It's a huge relief," Barrot said on X.
Grondeau, who turns 35 next week, was arrested in Shiraz, southern Iran, in October 2022 and sentenced to five years in prison for "conspiracy against the Islamic Republic".
His family rejected the charges, describing Grondeau as a passionate fan of Persian poetry who went to Iran on a tourist visa as part of a world tour.
France describes its nationals held by Iran as "state hostages" who have been arbitrarily detained and are innocent of all the charges against them.
<h2>'Dying slow death'&nbsp;</h2>
Until earlier this year, Grondeau had been identified only by his first name but his full identity was revealed by his family in January.&nbsp;
