A major part of the 56 km-long body of water exists in Tanzania, but some of it also extends into Kenya. Photographers have captured strange pictures of dead animals looking like stone figures floating on the water body. The lake's unique reddish-pink colour adds to the curiosity around it.&nbsp;
Lake Natron's pink colour comes from a type of algae, called cyanobacteria, that live in large amounts in the lake. The algae is pulled towards the lake because of the presence of certain minerals in it. The lake poses a double threat to animals and birds that unknowingly consume its water.

<h2>Lake Natron gets little rain and is extremely alkaline</h2>
The lake lies near the active Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, also known as the "Mountain of God". The shadow of the 7,650-foot-tall volcano falls over the lake. It hardly rains in the area, with only 400mm of rain reported every year. However, the rainwater evaporates even before touching the ground, thus lending it the name of "phantom rain". The temperature in the region can rise to 60 degrees Celsius.

Egyptians used sodium carbonate for the mummification process, and something similar happens to the animals and birds that die here.

<h2>Lesser Flamingoes have adapted to Lake Natron</h2>
 Despite all this, Lake Natron has a thriving ecosystem. It is filled with salt marshes, freshwater wetlands, and algae, a food source for the Lesser Flamingoes. It is a major breeding site for these flamingoes who have, over the years, adapted to the conditions of Lake Natron. Besides these birds, bacteria haloarchaea and a fish species called Alcolapia latilabris can also survive in and around Lake Natron.

Israel on Friday (Mar 21) said that it had killed the head of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Southern Gaza during its Thursday strikes.

Artemis is scheduled to return humans to the surface of the moon in 2027. Before this, NASA's Apollo mission in December 1972 took humans to the lunar surface.
Orlando Sentinel reports that previously, on NASA's website, the Artemis landing page included the words: "NASA will land the first woman, first person of colour, and first international partner astronaut on the Moon using innovative technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before".
Now, this phrase seems to have gone missing from the page.

<h2>NASA statement</h2>
In a statement to the Guardian, NASA spokesperson Allard Beutel said that the phrase was removed in line with Trump's order.
"In keeping with the president&rsquo;s executive order, we&rsquo;re updating our language regarding plans to send crew to the lunar surface as part of NASA&rsquo;s Artemis campaign. We look forward to learning more from [and] about the Trump administration&rsquo;s plans for our agency and expanding exploration at the moon and Mars for the benefit of all," he said.

However, he also issued evacuation orders for the Palestinian civilians living in those regions.&nbsp;

Trump criticised Democrats for not speaking out about the violence against Tesla, accusing them of hypocrisy given their strong condemnation of the Capitol riot, which saw Trump supporters breach Congress in protest of the 2020 election result.
He also referred to the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter killed by Capitol Police during the 6 January events.

<h2>'No indication of foul play'</h2>
London&rsquo;s Metropolitan Police confirmed that its Counter Terrorism Command is now leading the inquiry. A spokesperson said, &ldquo;While there is currently no indication of foul play, we retain an open mind at this time.&rdquo;
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) criticised Heathrow for the failure, calling it a result of poor planning. Willie Walsh, IATA&rsquo;s Director General, said on X, &ldquo;How is it that critical infrastructure&mdash;of national and global importance&mdash;is totally dependent on a single power source without an alternative? Meanwhile, Reform UK MP Richard Tice blamed the breakdown on Heathrow&rsquo;s decision to replace its diesel generators with a biomass-powered system in a bid to meet environmental targets.
Speaking on GB News, Tice said, &ldquo;Critical infrastructure like that obviously needs a backup and I can exclusively reveal to you this morning that Heathrow changed its backup systems to be net zero compliant. It got rid of their diesel generators and moved to a biomass generator which was designed not to completely replace the grid, but work alongside the grid.&rdquo;
He added, &ldquo;Their net zero compliant backup system has completely failed in its core function at the first time of asking. It beggar&rsquo;s belief.&rdquo;
