Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the idea of holding national elections during the ongoing full-scale war with Russia. He argued that such a move would pose as a threat to Ukraine’s existence and internal stability.
"I believe that in a war like this, elections as such are a huge risk. Elections right now are a tsunami for the country that will split Ukraine," Zelensky said during a press briefing on Sunday (Aug 22).
The statement by Zelensky came after former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, called for a mechanism to hold wartime elections arguing that Ukraine faced a crisis of governance since Russia's invasion in 2022.
In fact Fedorov was removed from office after six months of releasing a video in which he allegedly called for an election that has been put off because of the Russian invasion. Yevhenii Khmara was approved as Ukraine's new defence minister by the parliament on Wednesday (Aug 19).
In the video posted on YouTube Fedorov says "Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia."

"We must find a legal, safe and realistic mechanism that will allow Ukraine to renew its full democratic process even in the conditions of a long war,' he further said.
Zelesnky while rejecting the idea of elections argued that no partners have come forward with a solid idea to conduct them safely and legitimately and that holding a vote is impossible under the current security conditions, as Russian President Vladimir Putin is not interested in a ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Zelensky also said that Russia is planning to mobilise an additional 300,000 troops for its war effort after parliamentary elections in September for capturing the rest of Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region.
