US presidential election: Kamala Harris announces candidacy by signing official forms

United States (US) Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday (July 27)announced her candidacy for the November 5 presidential electionby signing the official forms. In a post on X, Vice President Harris said, "Today, I signed the forms officially declaring my candidacy for President of the United States."
"I will work hard to earn every vote.And in November, our people-powered campaign will win," Harris, 59, added.
Harrisswiftly consolidated Democratic support after President Joe Bidentapped her to succeed him last week. She has been backed by several Democrats includingFormer House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and the Clintons.
The Obamas endorse Harris
On Friday, former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama became the latest Democrats to back Harris.“We called to say Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,”Obama told Harris.

Harris, who has known the Obamas since before his election in 2008, thanked them for their friendship and said she looks forward to “getting there, being on the road” with them.
A recent survey by the Associated Press said that Harris alreadysecured the public support of a majority of the delegates to the Democratic National Convention, which begins August 19 in Chicago.
The committee is expected to hold a virtual nominating vote that would by August 7, make the 59-year-oldand a yet-to-be-named running mate the official Democratic ticket.
Trump holds a narrow lead over Harris: WSJ poll
A Wall Street Journal (WSJ) poll published on Friday said that former president and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trumphas a two-percentage-point leadover Kamala Harris.

Trump led Harris by49 per centto 47 per cent accordingto the poll of 1,000 registered voters that had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
