A court in Turkey on Monday (Aug 12) ordered the arrest of a woman for criticising the recent government ban on the social media platform Instagram, the news agency Reuters reported on Tuesday citing local media. The woman has not been identified yet.

Earlier this month, the government blocked access toInstagram for failing to comply with its "laws and rules" and public sensitivities. However, it removed the ban last Saturday, after it said that Instagramagreed to cooperate with the authorities to address the government's concerns.

The ban came after a top Turkish official accused the social media platform of blocking posts expressing condolences over the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

The criticism

During a street interviewlast week by a YouTube channel when Instagram was still blocked, the womanwas one of several passers-by who were asked what they thought about the ban.

"This is wrong. The president (Recep Tayyip Erdogan) cannot ban Instagram as he wishes," the woman said.
