US President Donald Trump, early on Saturday (Aug 16), spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, and briefed him on the Alaska meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders had a "lengthy call" as Trump flew back to Washington after the much-anticipated summit in Anchorage, Alaska, said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. In a post on X, the Ukrainian president revealed that he and Trump had a “long and substantive conversation”. He said that they engaged in a call that “lasted for more than an hour and a half, including about an hour of our bilateral conversation with President Trump.”

Trump informed Zelensky about the ‘main points’ of the Alaska meet with Putin

On X, Zelensky said he and Trump started the call with “one-on-one talks before inviting European leaders to join us.” On the call, Trump, Zelensky said, “informed about his meeting with the Russian leader and the main points of their discussion”. The president added that “We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security. ”

He also reaffirmed Ukraine's “readiness to work with maximum effort to achieve peace,” and said that “It is important that America’s strength has an impact on the development of the situation”.

Zelensky says he's ready for ‘trilateral’ meet

In the lengthy X post, the leader of war-torn Ukraine also said that his nation was ready for a trilateral meeting with Russia and the United States. “We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia. Ukraine emphasises that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this.”

Stressing the importance of keeping the Europeans “involved at every stage” he said it would “ensure reliable security guarantees together with America.” Zelensky also revealed that he would “meet with President Trump in Washington, DC, to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation.”
