Donald Trump assassination attempt: 58-year-old Ryan Routh, the suspect arrested for an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump at his golf course in Florida, laid in wait for nearly 12 hours, suggest reports.

A day after, he was spotted with a rifle in the vicinity of the former US president, Routh, on Monday (Sep 16) was charged with two gun-related crimes.

The suspect did not fire any shots but was arrested while escaping the police. The Marin County Sheriff's Office has released a video of the arrest. You can watch it here:

This was the second attempt on Trump's life in two months. Previously, the Republican presidential candidate for the 2024 US Elections was shot at in an alleged assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July13.

At the time, he narrowly escaped the attack as the bullet grazed his right ear. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, as per the FBI, saw the Trump rally as a "target of opportunity".

'All of a sudden we heard shots': Trump shares details about the assassination attempt

Sharing details about the assassination attempt, Trump during an event on X revealed that 'the suspect fired "four or five" shots.

"All of a sudden we heard shots being fired in the air. I guess probably four or five."

Commending secret services on a "fantastic job" Trump said more people are needed on his protection detail.

"Secret Service knew immediately it was bullets, and they grabbed me. ... We got into the carts and we moved along pretty, pretty good. I was with an agent, and the agent did a fantastic job."

"We do need more people on my detail," he added.

The suspect hid for 12 hours

According to a Reuters report, records show that a phone associated with the suspect Ryan Routh was located at Trump's golf course at least 11.5 hours before the incident — starting at 1:59 a.m. (0559 GMT) on Sunday morning.

Ronald Rowe, the acting US Secret Service Director, told reporters that the Republican presidential candidate's visit to the Trump International Golf Course was not planned, and it was unclear whether the suspect knew Trump would be there.

The suspect was on the "public side" of the fence along the golf course's boundary.
