Satellite images show construction of Chinese settlement near Pangong Lake: Reports

A recent set of satellite images have emerged that show the construction of a Chinese settlement near the Pangong Lake- a strategically located lake that separates India and China, according to media reports on Monday (Oct 14).
The settlement is located 38 kilometres east of the Line of Actual Control (LAC)- where border skirmishes happened between India and China in 2020.
A report by India Today on Monday said that the settlement lies outside India's territorial claims. The satellite images were captured last week by Maxar Technologies.
The images showed rapid construction over an area of about17 hectares.

The India Today report said that the Chinese settlement, which is situated nearthe Yemagou Road at an elevation of 4,347 meters, is bustling withconstruction and earth-moving machinery.
Speaking to the network, ProfessorY Nithiyanandam from theTakshashila Institution said that more than 100 buildings, including residential structures and larger administrative buildings, were being built.
ProfessorNithiyanandam said that open spaces and flattened land suggested "possible future use for parks or sports facilities."
Nithiyanandam pointed out a150-meter-long rectangular strip in the southeast corner, speculating it could be prepared for helicopter operations.
Construction of settlement began in April 2024
The India Today report said that the construction of the settlement began in early April this year.
Citing military sources, the report added that the settlement appeared to be divided into two parts-possibly distinguishing between administrative and operational zones.
China completes operational bridge near Pangong Lake
The above developments came after several media reports in July this yearsaid that China had completed and operationalised a bridge near the Pangong Lake.

A report by The Print said that this bridgeenhanced the mobility of Chinese forces and helped cut down the time needed to launch a quick operation.
During the budget session of Parliament, Congress MP Manish Tewarigave an adjournment notice in Lok Sabha to discuss the "border situation and the huge trade deficit with China."
"Since 2019, there have been ongoing border clashes between India and China, with reports of Chinese troops blocking access to patrolling points in Eastern Ladakh. Recent reports suggest that China has completed construction of a 400-metre bridge which gives Chinese forces the ability to speedily move troops between the North and South banks of the Pangong Lake," Tewari said on August 5.
