<p>A recent set of satellite images have emerged that show the construction of a Chinese settlement near the Pangong Lake- a strategically located lake that separates India and China, according to media reports on Monday (Oct 14).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The settlement is located 38 kilometres east of the Line of Actual Control (LAC)- where border skirmishes happened between India and China in 2020.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A report by India Today on Monday said that the settlement lies outside India's territorial claims. The satellite images were captured last week by Maxar Technologies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The images showed rapid construction over an area of about&nbsp;17 hectares.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>'More than 100 buildings being built'</strong></h2>

<p>The India Today report said that the Chinese settlement, which is situated near&nbsp;the Yemagou Road at an elevation of 4,347 meters, is bustling with&nbsp;construction and earth-moving machinery.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to the network, Professor&nbsp;Y Nithiyanandam from the&nbsp;Takshashila Institution said that more than 100 buildings, including residential structures and larger administrative buildings, were being built.</p>

<p>Professor&nbsp;Nithiyanandam said that open spaces and flattened land suggested "possible future use for parks or sports facilities."</p>

<p>Nithiyanandam pointed out a&nbsp;150-meter-long rectangular strip in the southeast corner, speculating it could be prepared for helicopter operations.</p>

<h2><strong>Construction of settlement began in April 2024</strong></h2>

<p>The India Today report said that the construction of the settlement began in early April this year.</p>

<p>Citing military sources, the report added that the settlement appeared to be divided into two parts-&nbsp;possibly distinguishing between administrative and operational zones.</p>

<p>The above developments came after several media reports in July this year&nbsp;said that China had completed and operationalised a bridge near the Pangong Lake.&nbsp;</p>
