Russia captures key frontline village in eastern Ukraine as Zelensky pleads for urgent US aid
Moscow said its forces were advancing towards the town of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine
Russia on Monday (Apr 22) said it has captured the village of Novomykhailivka in eastern Ukraine. The development comes as Ukrainian officials warn of a deteriorating situation on the frontlines in the coming weeks.
The Russian defence ministry in a statement said the “units of the southern grouping of troops have completely liberated the settlement of Novomykhailivka." The village is located 20 kilometres away from Vugledar that Russian forces have been trying to seize.
Earlier, Moscow said its forces were advancing towards the town of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine as they wrested control of the settlement of Bohdanivka.
"Units of the Southern grouping group of forces have fully liberated the settlement of Bohdanivka ... and have improved the situation along the front line," the Russian defence ministry said on Telegram.
The village is located just 5 kilometres east of Chasiv Yar, a heavily fortified hilltop town and forward artillery base for the Ukrainian army.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday he held talks with army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and Defence Minister Rustem Umerov about the situation in Chasiv Yar and over the latest updates from the frontlines.

He also took the opportunity to urge the US to quickly turn the $60 billion aid bill into law ahead of the highly-anticipated Russian offensive.
"We are preparing (for an offensive)," Zelensky announced.
"I hope we will be able to stay, and the weapons will come on time, and we will repel the enemy, and then we'll break the plans of the Russian Federation with regards to this full-scale offensive," he added in an interview.
Meanwhile, Russia has reacted to the USA’s $60 billion aid package for Ukraine, saying it will not change the situation on the frontlines.
“The Russian armed forces are improving their positions at the front … The money allocated and the weapons that will be supplied will not change this dynamic,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

“They will lead to new victims on the Ukrainian side. More Ukrainians will die, Ukraine will suffer greater losses,” he added.
