The counting of votes in theIndian states of Maharashtra and Jharkhand began at 8:00 am local time on Saturday (Nov 23). At the time of writing this brief, the ruling Mahayuti is leading in more than 140 seats in Maharashtra while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is leading in 49 seats. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the INDIA bloc is leading in over 20 seats while the BJP has secured the lead in 11 seats. In other news, Britain indicated on Friday that it could arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits the country.

The stage is set for the poll results for the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024, with the incumbent Mahayuti alliance of chief minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar camp) hoping to retain power. On the other hand, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, comprising the Congress and the breakaway faction of the Sena and NCP, is hoping to stage an upset.

Counting for the 81 assembly seats in Jharkhandwill begin at 8 am on Saturday. Voting in the state was held in two phases- November 13 and November 20.These elections are a key contest between the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led INDIA alliance and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

UK indicates Netanyahu risks being arrested if he enters country, cites 'legal obligations'

The UK government indicated on Friday (Nov 22) that it could arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits the country. Notably, the arrest would beagainst the warrant issued by the International Court of Justice (ICC).The ICC issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on November 21.

The Donald Trump 2.0 cabinet continues to expand as the United States (US) president-elect has named two more Republicans who will be a part of his administration.According to AFP, UK PM Keir Starmer's spokesman refused to give any statement on whether the government would arrest Netanyahu, but he said, "The UK will always comply with its legal obligations as set out by domestic law and indeed international law."
