Chinese woman with rare two uteruses gives birth to twins from both wombs

In a miraculous medical success, a woman, who had two uteruses, managed to give birth to twins from both wombs in September in China.

The woman, who is from northwest China, had the rare medical condition of two uteruses since birth.

This condition is very rare and has been till now found only in 0.3 per cent of women worldwide.

As per the China National Radio, both the uteruses of the woman were fully formed and had oviducts and ovaries.

Even though the double ovary condition is very rare, it is even more uncommon for a woman to manage to successfully give birth from both.

In early September, the woman in Shaanxi province gave birth to a boy and a girl. She delivered the babies when she was eight and a half months pregnant, the South China Morning Post reported.

Speaking to local media, senior obstetrician at the hospital,Cai Ying, said, “Being pregnant in each of the two uteruses through natural conception is very rare. We have only heard of a couple of such cases from both China and abroad.”

“It’s even rarer that a woman with this condition would successfully give birth after 37 weeks,” she added, further stating that it was a “one in a million” phenomenon.

How did the woman manage to give birth to twins from two uteruses?

Generally, women who have two uteruses face no symptoms till they become pregnant.

During pregnancy, they facea high risk of repeated miscarriages, underdevelopment of the foetus, premature birth, and post-partum haemorrhages.

The woman had been pregnant earlier, but suffered a miscarriage at 27 weeks because of unidentified factors, stated the report.

In January, after the woman became pregnant, a meticulous plan was sketched out by the doctors to ensure her safety.

The babies were delivered healthy. The boy weighed 3.3 kg and girl 2.4 kg.

The babies were delivered through a caesarean operation. The doctors discharged the woman and her newborns four days after the birth of the babies.

Reacting to the news, an online user said, “The babies lived a luxurious life inside their mother’s belly. Instead of sharing the same house like other twin fetuses, they lived in separate villas.”

“My colleague has two uteruses. She lost her baby three times before having a son. It was not easy for her!” said another netizen.
