It's the only way to stop drugs, gangs, criminals from entering US: Trump defends demand for border wall

'More than narcissism'

US President Donald Trump on Sunday defended his demand for a wall on the southern border stating that it is the only way to "stop drugs, gangs, human trafficking, criminal elements and much else from coming into" the United States.

"The only way to stop drugs, gangs, human trafficking, criminal elements and much else from coming into our Country is with a Wall or Barrier. Drones and all of the rest are wonderful and lots of fun, but it is only a good old fashioned Wall that works!" Trump tweeted out.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday (local time) said that all news reports concerning the US government shutdown and Syria are fake.

He further stated that he is working hard and negotiating with Democrats on the need for Border Security, saying that it could be a long stay.

In a tweet, Trump said, "I am in the White House, working hard. News reports concerning the Shutdown and Syria are mostly FAKE. We are negotiating with the Democrats on desperately needed Border Security (Gangs, Drugs, Human Trafficking & more) but it could be a long stay."

Trump, on Friday in a video, emphasized the need for a wall and blamed the shutdown on the Democrats.

"Our great country must have border security," the tweet was captioned.

"We’re going to have a shutdown, there’s nothing we can do about that because we need the Democrats to give us their votes,” he said.

“Call it a Democrat shutdown, call it whatever you want, but we need their help to get this approved,” he added in the video.

President Donald Trump's White House wants to see $5 billion for border security and the construction of physical barriers in any stop-gap government funding bill passed by Congress, a senior administration official said on Saturday, news agency Reuters reported.

"We continue to articulate what our expectations are for Congress, which is $5 billion for border security and physical barriers," the official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

The official said the White House hopes that the partial government shutdown that began on Saturday only lasts for a few days, but that it could last longer.
