Israeli airstrikes targeting Hamas militants hit UN school, homes in Gaza; 34 killed

ISRAEL GAZA

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza hit a UN school, sheltering displaced Palestinian families as well as two homes on Wednesday, killing at least 34 people, including 19 women and children, according to hospital officials.

The strike targeted the UN's Al-Jaouni Preparatory Boys School in central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp on Wednesday afternoon.

The Israeli military said they were targeting Hamas militants, who were planning attacks from the school premises. However, the claim could not be confirmed independently.

Out of 34, at least 14 dead were brought to Awda and al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, the officials said. Besides, at least 18 people were injured in the strike, they added.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians driven from their homes by Israeli offensives and evacuation orders are living in Gaza's schools.

During the war between Israel and Hamas, the al-Jaouni schools have been hit by multiple strikes as Israel claims that the Hamas terrorists use schools, hospitals, and camps while putting civilians in danger.

Reportedly, more than 90 per cent of Gaza's school buildings have been severely or partially damaged in Israeli strikes, as per a survey in July by the Education Cluster, a collection of aid groups led by UNICEF and Save the Children.

Palestinians killed in Israeli strike in West Bank

An Israeli air strike in the north of the occupied West Bank killed five Palestinians, the Palestinian health ministry said.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said a drone targeted a group of five young men near a mosque in the city of Tubas at dawn on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said that an aircraft struck a "terrorist cell” armed with explosives during a counter-terrorism operation by security forces in Tubas and the nearby town of Tamun.
