Hamas rejects USA’s peace proposal for Gaza, will now release its own plan

Hamas rejects USA’s peace proposal for Gaza, will now release its own plan

Conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas

Hamas on Wednesday (Apr 10) rejected a US proposal for a Gaza truce deal and hostage release, saying it would release its own plan instead, the Washington Post reported.

The report said that Hamas is insisting on adding a reference to the permanent end to the war in the said proposal. Hamas will now formulate its own proposal by the end of this week.

The earlier offer was a multi-staged deal that would see Israel release prisoners for some hostages, withdraw some troops from Gaza and also allow access to displaced Palestinians in northern parts of the strip.

Earlier media reports

Earlier, Lebanese Al-Akhbar newspaper reported Wednesday that Hamas could agree to a ceasefire deal, which could see the militant organisation release some hostages without the commitment of a permanent end to the war.

The newspaper, quoting “sources involved in the ongoing negotiations,” said that Hamas has told Qatar and Egypt that it is not interested in any further discussion unless its conditions are met, claiming this is the same stance it presented in the last round of talks.

The report also added that Hamas was willing to release all captives over three 42-day stages.

Whereabouts of Israeli hostages

Meanwhile, Hamas has indicated that the whereabouts of at least 40 Israeli hostages are not known, as per Israeli officials. This could mean that more hostages might have died in Hamas’ captivity than earlier known.

According to a CNN report, Hamas has told international mediators – which include Qatar and Egypt — it does not have 40 living hostages who match those criteria for release.

It must be noted that the majority of the above 100 hostages still in Hamas’s captivity are believed to be male IDF soldiers and men of military age.

Israel willing to let Gazans return to north

Earlier in ceasefire talks, Israel reportedly agreed to let at least 150,000 Palestinians return to northern Gaza. However, Israeli officials complained that Hamas was not willing to strike a peace deal.

More than 33,000 Palestinians have been killed since the Israeli offensive began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, with most of the 2.3 million population displaced and much of the enclave laid to waste.
