France to end New Caledonia state of emergency, reinforces additional police units
France's Pacific territory of New Caledonia
France is set to put an end to the state of emergency in its New Caledonia overseas territory.
The state of emergency in the French Pacific territory will officially cease to exist at 8:00 pm Paris time and 5:00 am Tuesday in Noumea,capital city of New Caledonia, Reuters reported citing a statement from Elysee Palace on Monday (May 27).
Notably, the state of emergency was imposed by Paris on May 15 in order to gain a greater control over the violence-hit region.
This comes as seven more mobile police units will be deployed in the region as a reinforcement to boost security amid the recent unrest that resulted in seven fatalities and hundreds of arrests, including destruction of property and vehicles.
The turmoil, lasting for two weeks, was ignited by a controversial electoral reform and exacerbated by economic disparities between the Indigenous Kanak population and residents of European descent.

New Caledonia has been under French control since 1853 and became an overseas territory after World War II. French citizenship was extended to all Kanaks in 1957. However, France's proposed reforms that seek to extend voting rights to Europeans who arrived after 1998 havesparked widespread protests.
The French parliament is set to discuss the constitutional changes.
Just a day after French President Emmanuel Macron visited the region in a bid to ease tensions, police fatally shot a man dead. With the arrival of an additional 480 gendarmes, the total number of French security forces in New Caledonia will rise to approximately 3,500.
FLNKS issues statement
FLNKS (Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front) issued a communique on Saturday (May 25) and stressed the importance of reducing tensions as a "political and non-repressive solution".

The French statement noted that ending the state of emergency is meant to facilitate a meeting of the FLNKS and that the "lifting of the roadblocks is the necessary condition for the opening of concrete and serious negotiations."
Noumea International Airportoperator will remain shut until June 2, as per reports.

During his brief visit, Macron assured that the planned electoral changes would "not be forced through." Christian Tein, the leader of the Field Action Coordination Unit, called on supporters to "remain mobilised" and "maintain resistance" against the electoral reforms, which the Kanak people fear would further marginalise them.
