Florida hit by power cuts as storm Irma weakens
Storm Irma batters Florida
Irma was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm on Monday.
Over six million homes and business in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama have been hit by power cuts as a result of storm Irma.
US state officials and utilities said outages were in power & light's service area in the southern and eastern parts of Florida, Reuters reported.
In Georgia, utilities reported almost 300,000 customers without power even asoutages were likely to increase as the storm moved north.
Irma was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm on Monday.
The storm continued to cause heavy damage in northern Florida cities inundating several areas as it slowly ebbed away.
Miami International Airport halted passenger flights through Monday with over 3,500 flights affected due to the storm.

Hurricane Irma's had made landfall in lower Florida Keys on Sunday, lashing the island chain with fearsome wind gusts and storm.
Irma was upgraded to a Category 4 storm hours earlier as more than six million Floridians had to be evacuated from their homes ahead of the hurricane.
Officials in Monroe County, where the Keys is located, told Reuters that most of the islands still lacked fuel, electricity, running water and mobile service.
President Donald Trump has vowed a full response to Irma and continued federal support for victims of Hurricane Harvey, which flooded Texas.
"These are storms of catastrophic severity and we are marshalling the full resources of the federal government to help our fellow Americans," Trump said.
"When Americans are in need, Americans pull together and we are one country," the President added.
Catastrophe modeling firm AIR Worldwide has estimated the storm has already done about $20 billion to $40 billion damage to insured property in Florida.
