Eight Chinese migrants were found dead on a beach in southern Mexico after the boat they were on capsized, officials told media on Saturday (Mar 30). Those who died include seven women and a man.

They were aboard a boat operated by a Mexican national that left Tapachula in Chapias state— over 1,100 km south of Mexico City but just a short distance away from Guatemala border— on Thursday (Mar 29), according to the prosecutor's office.

The bodies were discovered on Friday (Mar 29) in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, which falls along a route frequented by the people trying to reach the United States.

One individual survived the ordeal, South China Morning Post reported.

It remains unclear what happened to the Mexican national operating the boat.
