Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi meets PM Modi to strengthen India-UAE ties during historic visit

PM Modi with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (Sep 9) during his first official visit to India, aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations. Sheikh Khaled arrived in New Delhi on Sunday at the invitation of PM Modi for a two-day visit.

The two leaders held discussions at Hyderabad House, where PM Modi personally welcomed the Crown Prince. This marks a significant moment for India, as it is the first time the country is formally interacting with the future generation of the UAE's leadership.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared images of PM Modi greeting Sheikh Khaled, describing him as a "close friend." MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal tweeted, "A warm welcome for a close friend. PM Narendra Modi received Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, at Hyderabad House."

During his visit, Sheikh Khaled is also scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu and pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. After his engagements in the capital, the Crown Prince is expected to travel to Mumbai to attend a business forum on Tuesday. This forum will include top business leaders from both nations.

The MEA said that India and the UAE share "historically close and friendly ties" which have strengthened in recent years through a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This partnership covers various sectors such as politics, trade, investment, energy, technology, education, and culture.

Since PM Modi's landmark visit to the UAE in August 2015, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 34 years, relations between the two countries have significantly deepened. The UAE is India's largest trading partner in the Arab world, while India is the UAE's second-largest trading partner. The bilateral trade between the two nations was approximately USD 85 billion in 2022–23, with projections suggesting it could reach USD 100 billion by the end of the decade.
