British ambassador to Mexico fired after pointing assault rifle at embassy employee: Reports

Jon Benjamin, the British Ambassador to Mexico, was fired from his post after he pointed an assault rifle at a local embassy employee, reports said on Friday (May 31). A video shared on social media platform X showed Benjaminpointing the weapon at the embassy employee.

This incident happened in April.

A report by the Financial Times said that Benjamin was on a worktrip to a northwestern region plagued by drug cartel violence when the incident happened. Citing people familiar with the matter, the report said he was sacked.

'Have taken appropriate action'

On being asked about the reports, a British foreign ministry spokesperson told the news agency AFP that it was aware of this incident, adding, that appropriate action was taken.

The spokesperson added that the governmenthas "robust HR processes" to address "internal issues" when they arise.

The foreign ministry website said that Benjaminwas the UK ambassador to Mexico between 2021 and 2024.Benjamin's LinkedIn page says his term as ambassador ended in May.

The video

A video posted by an anonymous account on X earlierthis week appeared to show the moment Benjaminjokingly pointed the weapon towards the rear of the vehicle.The face of the embassy employee was blurred out.

"In a context of daily killings in Mexico by drug dealers, he dares to joke," a post accompanying the video reads.
