Australia warns: AI chatbots threaten children’s safety

Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has raised the alarm over AI chatbots that can encourage self-harm and sexually explicit conversations with minors. New laws coming into effect in December will ban social media for children under 16 and require platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to implement strict age verification measures. Breaches can lead to fines of up to A$50 million.
