El Nino could mean 451,000 extra heat deaths

A new Climate Impact Lab study estimates that El Niño could lead to up to 451,000 additional heat-related deaths worldwide between June 2026 and February 2027, compared with an average year. Researchers based the projections on temperature and excess mortality data across 24,378 regions, factoring in local climate conditions and vulnerability.
