Replying to his mentor’s message during the post-match presentation, Abhishek said, “I mean, I've said this before as well. I don't know what cricket he was playing back at that time, but it's not that easy at all. And I would say if any batter wants to go there and bat like that, it's not easy at all. It just happens once in a while.” Also read| Abhishek Sharma’s 113 fires India to T20I series win against New Zealand in Wellington Abhishek and Sooryavanshi ran riot during the Wellington T20I run chase, whacking 118 runs in the first six overs – a world record. Following a submissive start to his IPL and domestic career, Abhishek emerged as the best Indian opener since the 2024 T20 World Cup. His exploits saw him break several T20I batting records and helped India defend their T20 crown earlier this year. Elsewhere, Prabhsimran Singh was instrumental in guiding PBKS to its second IPL final in 2025, which they lost to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The right-hander has scored over 1,000 IPL runs in the past two editions, including 10 fifties and a career strike rate of over 156. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals are yet to win an IPL title, having reached the final just once (in 2020) in 18 years of this tournament's history.

The ODI World Cup 2027 is just a little over a year away, and former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh wants a set of players fixed without big changes at the last moment. India last won the ODI World Cup in 2011, where Yuvraj was named Player of the Series (POTS) for scoring 362 runs and taking 15 wickets. The 44-year-old former all-rounder also wants match-winners to be picked instead of multi-skill players. India start their road to the ODI World Cup 2027 with a three-ODI series at home against the West Indies from September 27.
Yuvraj warns about massive changes ahead of ODI World Cup 2027
"Every time India have faltered is when they've made some massive changes at the last moment or in the tournament. So I think it's important that we stick to a team that we believe can lift the 2027 World Cup and stick by those guys whether they fail or succeed till that moment. The BCCI is yet to announce the squad for the West Indies ODIs, which could give a better picture of how the ODI World Cup 2027 squad is going to look.Rohit, who plays only in the 50-over format for India, has been facing scrutiny for quite some time now. Yuvraj Singh was one of cricket’s biggest match winners, let alone for India, and what he has trained in Abhishek Sharma has done wonders for India since. Abhishek is Team India’s premier T20I opener, surging to top form since elevating his hitting game playing for the SunRisers Hyderabad in the IPL. The left-armer knows his strengths and weaknesses, having openly talked about them earlier during this series, including having a limited range of shots. Despite that, he has managed to scale heights in this trending format, making everyone proud, including Yuvraj, who took to his social media handle (X) to take a sly dig at him while expressing pride over his performance. “Still can’t get a 50 off 12 balls, can you? 🤪 Well played - keep going strong! 💪🏻 @OfficialAbhi04 #IndVSNz,” Yuvraj wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Meanwhile, sharing his thoughts on his 14-ball fifty, the fastest for India in this series, Abhishek said, “That's what my team wants from me, and I just want to execute all the time. But obviously, it's not easy to do it every time, but I think it's all about mental as well and the atmosphere you get around your dressing room as well. Speaking on breaking Yuvraj’s 12-ball fifty record, the Indian opener said it’s almost impossible (for anyone) to do so. “That's more than impossible for anyone (to break Yuvraj's fastest T20 fifty record), but still, you never know. Any batsman could do it because I think all the batters have been batting really well in this series as well, and going forward, it's going to be fun,” Abhishek said. In Guwahati, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and elected to field first. Restricting the Kiwis to 153 for nine in the first innings, the hosts gave themselves a strong chance to seal the series, which they eventually did (3-0). After India lost opener Sanju Samson early for the second game running, Abhishek and Ishan Kishan went berserk, stitching a 50-plus stand inside four overs. Kishan departed next on a 13-ball 28, before Suryakumar and Abhishek added 102 for the third wicket to see India home with 10 overs and eight wickets remaining.
