Gill, out of the Indian team due to dengue was hospitalised in Chennai and was advised not to travel to Delhi for India’s second World Cup contest against Afghanistan on Wednesday. However, it is still thought that Gill won’t play the World Cup match as he is yet to be match-fit against the arch-rivals Pakistan.

While the Indian team was playing against Afghanistan on Wednesday, Gill arrived in Ahmedabad to prepare for the clash. Gill spent a night at the Kaurvery Hospital in Chennai and returned to the hotel before taking the flight to Ahmedabad. It was advised by the doctors that Gill was good enough to take a flight to Ahmedabad as he could not fly to Delhi with his teammates because his platelet count was low and a flight journey was not advisable.

The rest of the Indian team is expected to arrive in Ahmedabad on Thursday evening as they prepare for the crunch clash. The team’s press conference takes place on Friday with a brief practice session scheduled for Thursday. The team will train with a full warm-up session on Friday, which will give a clear idea of how fit Gill will be.

It is thought that team management is not willing to take any risk with Gill, but will explore any opportunities if he trains on Friday. However, with no rush to get him back in the team, Ishan Kishan and skipper Rohit Sharma are likely to continue as the openers. India are expected to go unchanged from their winning combination against Australia and Afghanistan but could explore the possibility of using Ravichandran Ashwin.

Skipper Rohit Sharma was at his sensational best on Wednesday (Oct 11) as he led India to back-to-back wins in the ODI World Cup. Breaking records left, right and centre, Rohit registered the fastest hundred for India in the ODI World Cup while also breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most tons. His blistering innings saw India chase down 273 runs target with 15 overs to spare to beat Afghanistan by eight wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Chasing 273, Rohit had a no-nonsense approach that saw him take on the opposition bowlers from the start. In the first 10 overs, India scored 94 runs to put Afghanistan on the mat from the start 30 balls to complete his fifty. He along with Ishan Kishan (47) stitched a partnership of 156 runs for the opening wicket that laid the foundation for the win.

"But, I think partially because of the pressure they have been put under by whom they are bowling to. The batsmen have been very good. On his World Cup debut, Shafique scored 113 which consisted of three sixes and 10 fours, while Rizwan played 134-run knock that consisted of three sixes and eight fours. His innings is the joint-third best in a successful run chase in the World Cup alongside former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming.

This is a record run chase in a World Cup match as they surpassed Ireland’s win against England in 2011. Ireland chased 329 vs England, but the tally was surpassed by Pakistan to underline their credentials as contenders for the World title.

Riding on Dawid Malan's brilliant 140-run innings and a disciplined bowling performance, England defeated Bangladesh by 137 runs at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Tuesday (Oct 10). Bruised after a moral downing defeat against New Zealand in the opening match, England had a point to prove and the defending champions did just that.&nbsp;

Chasing a demanding target of 365 on the Dharamsala pitch that started to play slow in the second half, Bangladesh never got momentum by their side.&nbsp;Reece Topley, playing his debut game on the World Cup stage, started the proceedings immaculately with the white cherry by sending Tanzid Hasan and&nbsp;Najmul Hossain Shanto back to the hut in his opening over.

The lanky, left-arm pacer struck again in the sixth over when he cleaned up Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan (1), denting the chances of the subcontinent team to mount any serious challenge. Although opener Litton Das sparred by hitting a breezy half-century, he was also undone by all-rounder Chris Woakes.&nbsp;

Apart from Das, only Mushfiqur Rahim (51) provided any sort of sizeable contribution as the middle and lower-middle order failed to find answers to difficult questions posed by the English bowlers.&nbsp;

<h2>Spirited English batting performance&nbsp;</h2>

Put into bat first, England batters unleashed fury upon Bangladeshi bowlers.&nbsp;The English side stuck to their strength&nbsp;of going hard with the bat and reaped rich dividends for it.&nbsp;

While Jonny Bairstow took the lead initially to take on the Bangladeshi bowlers, Malan continued with the onslaught once the right-hand batter was dismissed.&nbsp;

Root walked in at no.3 and went about his business as usual, scoring a fluent fifty.&nbsp;On a track that didn't grip or turn too much, Malan made merry with a big daddy hundred. During the 33rd over, he smashed&nbsp;Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 21 runs.&nbsp;

The champions aggregated just 66 runs in the final 10 overs when they looked certain for something well beyond 400 at one point. Perhaps, this will be a talking point for the English side as they go back to the drawing board.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: India brave initial blues to stave off Australia challenge, win by 6 wickets

Following hosting the second match of the World Cup 2023 between Bangladesh and Afghanistan, the HPCA Cricket Stadium in Dharamsala has come under severe scrutiny over patchy and sandy outfield, deemed ‘average’ by ICC on Sunday. On Monday, on the eve of the second match at this venue, England captain Jos Buttler voiced his concerns over an injury scare for anyone, let alone his side’s players, playing on this outfield.

Afghanistan’s head coach, Jonathan Trott, also sounded worried for Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman, who, during the game against Bangladesh, escaped suffering a knee injury after visuals showed how his knee got jammed into the patchy outfield while fielding near the boundary.&nbsp;

However, upon inspection by an independent pitch consultant, Andy Atkinson, authorised by the ICC, he, alongside the match referee, Javagal Srinath, appeared ‘comfortable’ with the playing conditions at the venue.

Speaking to the media ahead of the second England game in this World Cup, Captain Jos Buttler didn’t look ‘okay’ with the patchy outfield, especially near the boundary line, urging his players to be careful while fielding in the deep.

"I think it's poor, in my own opinion," Buttler said.&nbsp;

"I think any time you're talking about being careful diving, or maybe being careful when you're fielding, it goes against everything you want to be as a team.

"You want to dive through a row of houses to save a run. That's obviously not ideal, the way the surface is, the outfield. But we won't use it as an excuse. We'll adapt to it. But certainly, if you feel like you're having to hold yourself back, it's not a place you want to be as a team, or as a player, or in a World Cup match,” England’s captain said.

<h2>‘Fielding becomes a risk</h2>

Given the nature of the sport, any injury at this point can hamper a side’s World Cup campaign, and Buttler is no different in fearing the worst.

Seemingly worried about players not putting in their 100% while fielding, the English captain said, "You want to put your body on the line and be trying to save every single run and have confidence in the field. It's not as good as it could be, or should be.”

"Naturally, you want to be instinctive in the field: if you see a ball, you want to dive for it. So, it's unique, to be honest, and I know it's going to be the same for both teams. But if you're having to hold yourself back, you shouldn't have to feel like that. Hopefully, fingers crossed, no one on either side picks up an unfortunate injury," he added.

Meanwhile, England lost their opening match to New Zealand by nine wickets, whereas, Bangladesh stood tall against Afghanistan, winning by six wickets.

Santner, the first New Zealand spinner to take five wickets in a World Cup match, dominated the Dutch who were bowled out for 223 in 46.3 overs.

The victory gave New Zealand two wins in as many games after crushing title-holders England by nine wickets in Ahmedabad on Thursday.&nbsp;

"We did a great job batting first, built partnerships at the top and the bowlers did a fantastic job tonight," said Kiwis captain Tom Latham.

The Netherlands were never in the hunt in the chase as they lost Vikramjit Singh (12), Max O'Dowd (16) and Bas de Leede (18) in the first 17 overs with just 67 on the board.

Top-scorer Colin Ackermann, with a 73-ball 69, and Teja Nidamanuru (21) added 50 for the fourth wicket but Santner removed Ackermann and skipper Scott Edwards (30) to virtually end Dutch hopes.

World Cup 2023 - Shubman Gill could return for Pakistan match, to stay with team during recovery

Dropping Virat Kohli, that too in a run chase, is a crime for any opposition. Mitchell Marsh was the offender in this case during the India-Australia World Cup clash in Chennai on Sunday. While India got reduced to 2 for 3 at one stage in the chase of 200 with three batters back in the hut on ducks, Virat escaped getting caught after his top-edge shot was dropped by Marsh, who ran from the square leg area.

That dropped catch, however, proved too costly for Australia, as Virat went on to score 85, adding 165 runs with KL Rahul for the fourth wicket. As a result, India walked away with a six-wicket win in their CWC 2023 opener.&nbsp;

Speaking on the repercussions of that particular dropped catch, Josh Hazlewood, who picked two wickets in his first over, defended Marsh, saying Alex Carey running in towards him caught him off-guard, resulting in putting it down.&nbsp;

In hindsight, had that catch been taken, India would have been 20 for four, with chase master Kohli back in the pavilion.&nbsp;

However, with bygones being bygones, Hazlewood said such things (catches getting dropped) are part of the game and can happen to anyone at any stage.&nbsp;

"I didn't think Carey could get there. I think it was Mitch's catch, and probably just Carey got quite close in the end, so, it might have just put Mitch off," Josh said of the dropped catch. "Yeah, he dropped a catch, it's one of those things that happens, and everyone's training hard and working hard off the field to hang on to them. So, yeah, we'll continue on."

<h2>King Kohli, Rahul march India home</h2>

India needed 200 runs to win on a dry Chennai track to open their World Cup with a bang. The start, however, had put them down right away, with three of their top four batters getting out in the space of seven balls.

The pair of Kohli and KL, who, against Pakistan during the Asia Cup, bailed India out of a similar situation, did the job for the team again.&nbsp;

While Kohli was at his absolute best on Sunday, KL Rahul’s return to form strengthened the team's batting, as he slammed an unbeaten 97 to see India home.

In the first innings, it was the spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja (three wickets), Kuldeep Yadav (two wickets) and Ravi Ashwin (one wicket), that ran riot and dismissed Australia on 199.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, India will face Afghanistan in their next CWC match in Delhi on Wednesday&nbsp;(Oct. 11).&nbsp;

Although spinners accounted for six out of ten Aussie wickets, Jadeja’s twin strike in the 30th over put Australia on the mat on a dry Chepauk pitch. Jadeja, however, picked Steve Smith’s wicket, a moment that proved to be&nbsp;the turning point of the match.

Just when Smith and Marnus Labuschagne looked like taking the game away from India with their playing template, Jadeja bowled a Jaffa, which turned right after hitting the tight spot, cleaning Smith’s off-stump. Speaking to the media after India chased down 200 with six wickets in hand despite early jitters, Jadeja pinpointed the specific moment when the momentum shifted towards India.

"I think that was the turning moment, you know when you get a wicket like Steve Smith. From there onwards it was not easy to just come in and rotate the strike for the new batter," said Jadeja. "So, I would say that wicket was the turning point,” Jadeja told media persons after the game.

Having played for India and Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, Jaddu, as most fans call him, is quite familiar with the conditions at Chepauk.&nbsp;His experience of playing at this venue for over a decade helped him reap rewards in the&nbsp;World Cup game against Australia.

“And yeah, it helped me, because I knew the conditions in Chennai. I've been playing here for like 10-11 years, so I know the conditions on this ground. I enjoyed it, and whatever I contribute to the team, I always feel happy,” Jadeja added.

"When I started the first over, the ball was stopping after falling a little slow. I thought it was the afternoon, it was hot, and the wicket was dry. I thought a stump-line would be better. From here some balls would turn, and some would go straight so it won't be easy for the batsman to line up. This was my plan that I should bowl at the stumps and luckily the ball to Smith turned a little more,” Jadeja added.

Meanwhile, Kohli and KL Rahul’s heroics led India to a famous six-wicket win over Australia in Chennai. While Kohli hit a stunning 85, Rahul scored the winning runs, remaining unbeaten on 97.
