Though concerns raised saw cricket’s governing body intervene in the matter, the next encounter at this venue between England and Bangladesh on Tuesday will go ahead per the schedule.

ICC’s spokesperson confirmed board's independent pitch consultant, Andy Atkinson, is 'comfortable with the conditions' of the outfield at the venue.

"The process for assessing the condition of the pitch and outfield lies with the match officials under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, and the outfield at Dharamsala was rated as average after the Afghanistan v Bangladesh match. Additionally, the ICC independent pitch consultant has taken a look at the outfield today and is comfortable with the conditions as is Javagal Srinath, the Match Referee for the next game," an ICC spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, during the second innings, Afghanistan’s Mujeeb-ur-Rahman nearly escaped a serious knee injury as he dived to stop the ball from touching the boundary ropes.&nbsp; 
As his knee got jammed inside the spongy Dharamsala outfield, it raised doubts over the venue hosting further games in the tournament.

Looking at the video of the instance surfacing on the internet, it appears a lot of work needs to go into solving this issue. Per the latest reports, even on Sunday, the ground staff worked on making conditions friendly for the fielders to dive, as also noted by Trott in the post-match presser on Saturday.

"If you've got players unsure of whether they can dive...," Trott said in the post-match press conference.&nbsp;

"We see the product of cricket all around the world where players are taught and encouraged to improve their fielding. Then when you've got players worried about getting injured... we're lucky Mujeeb hasn't got a serious knee injury towards the end."

"Yes he probably shouldn't have dived with his knee but I think it was Devon Conway earlier from New Zealand... It's something for them [organisers] to look at. I'm definitely not putting any blame on that, but that's something to keep an eye on for the future," the former England batter added.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: Sri Lanka will be without star bowler against South Africa, confirms head coach Silverwood

India's batter in supreme form, Shubman Gill is unwell and said to miss the home team's first game in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. However, the Indian Coach and veteran cricketer, Rahul Dravid, offered hopes by saying, Gill is "feeling better than yesterday" and the medical team is monitoring him, we've got 36 hours to go (for the game).

Queried on whether Gill would be in a condition to play the game on Sunday, Dravid said, "the medical team hasn't ruled him out yet".

India will take on Australia at Chennai's MA Chidambaram stadium on 8th October, in what will be the opening game for both teams.

Having arrived in Chennai on Wednesday noon, the Indian and Australian teams commenced net practice sessions at the stadium on Thursday, while Gill had to give these sessions a miss, owing to his poor health as the home team's first game in the World Cup, Sunday's game is much awaited.

With the ODI format and its relevance being debated about, after the average footfall at the inaugural England vs. New Zealand game in Ahmedabad, Sunday's game is expected to show the enthusiasm that a team India game generates in the stadium and off it.

Speaking of the hectic travel and demanding World Cup schedule across ten-Indian cities, Dravid said he saw it as a great opportunity for the Indian team to perform before the home crowd and showcase their talent.

Queried about the ideal score for the India-Australia game, Rahul mentioned he saw no ideal score and teams would have to "adapt and react", as there was no template of a safe total. On the larger tournament, he elaborated on the red soil and black soil conditions at different pitches across venues and how each one posed a unique challenge.

On the dwindling popularity of the ODI format, Dravid said the Indian team hasn't played a lot of ODI Cricket in recent times. He listed out the T20 tournaments that had to be played in quick succession and also the impact of COVID as being some of the probable factors.

Given it takes longer to recover from the dengue fever, with kidneys likely getting affected, Gill’s return timeline is not decided as of yet.&nbsp;

With Gill getting sidelined for a few days at least, likely missing the second game against Afghanistan as well, India would be using Ishan’s services at the top.

Playing at the top, Ishan scored his maiden double hundred against Bangladesh in Dhaka last year.

Australia could be without their star all-rounder Marcus Stoinis for their World Cup 2023 opener against India on Sunday (Oct 8) in Chennai, head coach Andrew McDonald said to media on Thursday. Stoinis picked up a hamstring niggle during the first ODI against India in Mohali last month and has been out since, even opting to sit out in the two warm-up matches.

While addressing the media, McDonald said Australia will have two practice sessions on Thursday and Friday and will take a call on his selection after that only.&nbsp;

"He's got a slight hamstring complaint at this stage, so that's why he missed the practice games, and he'll be touch and go for the first game against India," Australia coach Andrew McDonald said of Stoinis.

In Stoinis’ absence, Cameron Green got an extended run and proved his worth against Pakistan in their second warm-up tie in Hyderabad. Speaking about their plans of including all all-rounders in the playing XI at some time during the World Cup campaign, McDonald said,&nbsp;

"There's a way that we can fit them both into the one side," McDonald said.&nbsp;

"Over the last 18 months, we've had a pretty clear way that we want to build three ways of playing. One of those ways is definitely with all the all-rounders and potentially two quicks, and you've seen that side in the past 18 months being played, so there is a real possibility that both of those players can be in the same XI, and we haven't ruled that out," the head coach added.

<h2>‘Maxwell pulled up really well’</h2>

Emphasizing the value in-form Maxwell adds to the side, McDonald said with both Green and Glenn Maxwell starring with both bat and ball in the lead-up to the marquee event, Australia would like to benefit from this and move forward accordingly in the tournament.

"Cameron Green got a little bit of time in the middle also, and clearly Glenn Maxwell being able to cope with the demands of the game that he played, a significant innings plus being able to back up and bowl as many overs as he did. He has pulled up really well,” McDonald said.

“So, a few of those moving parts that we had leading in have unfolded positively for us, which is nice. If you asked me two weeks ago, I would have been a little bit worried, but now everything seems to have come together nicely,” the head coach further admitted.

With rain lashing the capital city in the past few weeks, the TNCA has imported four new super-soppers from Australia to avoid a washout situation.

Though the rain threat is cut down significantly in the lead-up to the high-octane clash, with the MET department predicting only a 10 per cent chance of thunderstorms on game day, completely discounting chances of showers would be a mistake.

Over the past three weeks, widespread rains in Chennai forced TNCA to postpone its league matches, with the scenario not changing over the recent weekend as matches scheduled on Saturday and Sunday took place on Monday.

Since only a few days are left before the match gets underway in Chennai, the TNCA officials claim to take every possible precaution to curb the rain threat.

"We have bought four new advanced super-soppers for the World Cup because we don’t want to take any chances. We have also replaced all the old covers with new ones, including heavy ones so that we have all bases covered," a TNCA official said, as quoted by the Indian Express.

Outside of the big India vs. Australia game, Chennai will host four more matches. Per the report, three pitches are being prepared for India's first CWC match, while the final call will be taken 48 hours before the start of the game. On Monday, the ground staff at the Chepauk stadium was busy giving final touches to the surfaces.&nbsp;

Per the ground staff, the outfield has remained dry despite the rains, cutting down the toss factor. Historically, the Chepauk stadium favours spinners, with stats revealing only five 300-plus totals scored at the venue in ODIs. India hasn't scored 300 or more at this venue.

Meanwhile, India and Australia are two frontrunners for the CWC title, with both teams possessing match winners in bulk.&nbsp;
