On March 27 this year, during the Academy Awards ceremony Will Smith did not like a joke made by presenter Chris Rock at his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's expense. He walked up to the stage and whacked Chris Rock across the face in response. The act created an uproar that ultimately led the Academy to ban Smith for 10 years from Oscars or related events. Will Smith's public reputation plummets after the Oscar slap

Hollywood diva Zoe Kravitz says she wishes she had "handled that differently" in response to her messages sent after Will Smith struck Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars ceremony.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the actor responded to her Instagram posts that appeared to refer to Smith confronting Rock onstage at the March 27 event and yelling at him from his seat following a joke about the King Richard actor`s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The posts, which didn`t specifically name anyone, drew criticism from Smith`s supporters and were later taken down.

"It`s a scary time to have an opinion or to say the wrong thing or to make controversial art or statements or thoughts or anything," Kravitz told the publication. "It`s mostly scary because art is about conversation. That should, in my opinion, always be the point. The internet is the opposite of conversation. The internet is people putting things out and not taking anything in."

One of her posts from the time of the incident showed the star of The Batman on the red carpet and included the caption, "Here`s a picture of my dress at the award show where we are apparently assaulting people on stage now." A second post featuring another pic of herself at the Oscars included a similar message: "And here is a picture of my dress at the party after the award show -where we are apparently screaming profanities and assaulting people on stage now."

Kravitz told the magazine that she doesn`t feel the need to always make comments that will be universally supported. "I was reminded that I`m an artist. Being an artist is not about everybody loving you or everyone thinking you`re hot. It`s about expressing something that will hopefully spark a conversation or inspire people or make them feel seen," she continued. "I think I`m in a place right now where I don`t want to express myself through a caption or a tweet. I want to express myself through art."

She continued by saying that she has mixed feelings about her Oscars posts and wouldn`t necessarily handle it in the same way if she could go back in time. "I`m torn about what to say right now, because I`m supposed to just talk about it; I have very complicated feelings around it," Kravitz said. "I wish I had handled that differently. And that`s OK."

Chris Rock ‘not ready’ to speak to Will Smith after apology video for Oscar slap

It seems that American comedian Chris Rock is in no mood to address Will Smith's apology video, but is still okay making passing jokes about the Oscar incident. While performing on a stage in Atlanta on Friday night for his 'Chris Rock Ego Death World Tour', he addressed the infamous slap and called the 'Men In Black' actor 'Suge Smith'.

Rock's comments came hours after Smith posted a six-minute-long video to show how "deeply remorseful" he is for slapping the former during the Academy Awards in March.

"Everybody is trying to be a f---ing victim. If everybody claims to be a victim, then nobody will hear the real victims," Rock said. "Even me getting smacked by Suge Smith. I went to work the next day, I got kids."

Rock later quipped, "Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face."

Smith's latest apology video starts with the text, "Over the last few months, I've been doing a lot of thinking and personal work. You asked a lot of fair questions that I wanted to take some time to answer."

Smith is then seen entering a room and talking about his altercation with Rock. He explained why he didn't apologize to Rock during his Oscar win acceptance speech for best actor in 'King Richard'. "I was fogged out by that point," he said. "It's all fuzzy."

Smith also shared that he's tried to contact Rock, but he indicated that he's not ready to talk and will reach out when he feels comfortable. "So I will say to you Chris, I apologize to you. My behaviour was unacceptable and I'm here whenever you are ready to talk," Smith adds.

I went to work the next day, I got kids." Rock later quipped, "Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face." Smith's latest apology video starts with the text, "Over the last few months, I've been doing a lot of thinking and personal work. You asked a lot of fair questions that I wanted to take some time to answer." Smith is then seen entering a room and talking about his altercation with Rock. He explained why he didn't apologize to Rock during his Oscar win acceptance speech for best actor in 'King Richard'. "I was fogged out by that point," he said. "It's all fuzzy." Smith also shared that he's tried to contact Rock, but he indicated that he's not ready to talk and will reach out when he feels comfortable. "So I will say to you Chris, I apologize to you. My behaviour was unacceptable and I'm here whenever you are ready to talk," Smith adds. Chris Rock jokes about infamous Oscar slap after Will Smith’s apology video

Months after the infamous incident during Oscars 2022 when Will Smith went on to slap presenter Chris Rock, the ‘Men in Black’ actor has offered a second apology to the actor-comedian. Smith smacked Rock across the face over a joke and later went on to win the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in ‘King Richard’. Smith had also apologised half-heartedly in his acceptance speech without referring to Rock. In a video titled ‘It’s been a minute...’ that Smith shared on his social media accounts, he said he has been doing a lot of thinking and has decided to answer a few fair questions that have been posed to him.

During the Oscar ceremony, Rock was invited to the stage to present an award. In his bit, he joked about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. While referring to Jada, Rock said he can’t wait to see ‘G.I. Jane’ 2. A 1997 war film, ‘G.I. Jane’ had Demi Moore’s protagonist, a female Navy Seal, shaving her head. The joke seemingly targetted Jada’s lack of hair, which is due to the alopecia condition. At first Smith appeared to laugh, but after looking at his wife’s eyes roll, he walked up to the stage and attacked Rock.

Did Will Smith use Chris Rock apology video to advertise a product?

The glamorous night of Oscars 2022 turned chaotic after Will Smith lost cool and punched comedian Chris Rock. The latter had made a joke around Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hairstyle that left the actor fuming. He went up to him and punched him in front of everyone.

Jada currently sports a bald look and has been suffering from a hair loss condition called Alopecia since last year. She took to Instagram to post a video of her bald self in 2021 and wrote, “Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something. Me and this alopecia are going to be friends… period!”

What is Alopecia?
It is classified as a common autoimmune condition that results in unpredictable hair loss. It is regarded as a common condition among many, and individuals with the disorder might often experience that hair falls out in small patches and in some cases it is extreme and rapid hair loss in patches.

Alopecia Areata can affect people from any gender, at any age. It usually happens before the age of 30 but there’s no hard and fast rule around it.

The 'Aladdin' actor has faced major backlash following his Oscar controversy and has been away from the media glare for over a month now. Amid all, seeing Smith in the country was one of the major shocks and unexpected moments for all of us. Opinion: Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas: Is it me or do you also cringe at those happy life pics? The photos that have taken the internet by storm show Smith surrounded by the people and is greeting them before he enters the airport. The specific reason behind his impromptu visit to India is yet unknown. But as we saw in the pictures, there is a monk standing next to him and he's also wearing spiritual long mala (necklace). This is not the first time when the Oscar-winner actor has visited the country.
Do you think like this?

I do.

Because, what's with this obsession over one actor and her singer husband in media, particularly digital media?

What forces online news and entertainment outlets to fall over one another to report the minutest details of this ‘marriage made in heaven?’ Who is controlling who? Is the celebrity controlling Instagram? Is instagram pulling the strings of media, or is media seeking out the celebrity?

And what cultural, social and any other value do these random updates provide?

During the Covid pandemic, several celebrities stuck at home shared tidbits from their daily lives as if that would help millions in lockdown get through their miserable days.

Many people saw through it and mocked the hell out of celebs. One ‘singathon’ of ‘Imagine’ led by Gal Gadot was particularly targeted with savage commentary on out-of touch celebs.

From the first wave of Covid onwards, several commentators questioned whether the pandemic would herald the end of celebrity news as we knew it.

Hell, no.

The pandemic is now receding, or we have learned to live with it, and celebrity droll is back in full force.

Celebrity sharing of mundane aspects of their lives is here again.

Every minute detail of Katrine Kaif – Vicky Kaushal's marriage is examined threadbare. Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor's marriage, despite it being very low key for a Bollywood royalty affair, was among top searched news for a few days in India. And now, every murky, nauseating details of their contentious marriage is being shared in a courtroom by Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

But how much celebrity sharing is too much sharing? Will it all back-fire some day?

Lessons from the Will Smith family

I had a similar cringing feeling when Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith went on a 'sharing spree' in the past few years on social media.

They made an art of washing dirty linen in public.

In the ‘Red Table Talk’ show, three generations of Jada Pinkett's family discussed their lives, with a peppering of sexual themes: from masturbation to porn addition. Clearly the point was to go viral, grab eyeballs, get clicks.

In the run-up to this year’s Academy Awards, Will pulled all stops to get attention to his life and work. Weight loss stunts, daily life vlogs, biography reading sessions, sharing controversial details about his life and wife, shocking statements like how he wanted to kill his father...

The script was perfect. He kind of felt he deserved an Oscar. And on the day he got it, he ruined it all.

He will be forever remembered as the actor who slapped on stage the Oscar presenter Chris Rock on the day he won the best actor Academy Award for ‘King Richard’. All the PR drivel that was supposed to lead up to that momentous occasion went down the drain, and there was radio silence from

Will after the fateful Oscar night.

At the time of writing this, the last Instagram post by him was an open apology to Chris Rock. Just look at the mood in the previous posts on his Instagram feed and you get the idea about the downfall.

And last heard, he has resurfaced in India. Jada referred to a ‘healing process’ in the latest edition of ‘Red Table Talk.’ Is Will on a spiritual ‘healing journey’ in India?

Celebrity news is sawdust, not stardust

This is the context in which I wrote the first line of this piece. There is a conscious attempt to create an aura around celebrity personalities, a happy-go-lucky life that the average person picking up the gossip magazine at the end of the shopping queue wants to live but can't. It's the life that, paradoxically, creates a sense of elation and frustration at the same time for those obsessed with celebrity news.

In recent years, it has also taken another cynical twist: celebrities sharing their fears, anxieties, and depression stories. While it may help foreground mental health issues, the celebrity is at the front and centre of attention, period. At the end of the day, it is fluff, a jacuzzi bubble.

Virality: Celebrity is the paparazzi

Celebrities treating media like their poodles, thinking every action of theirs will be lapped up by the paparazzi, is nothing new. But the difference now in the post-social-media world, is that the celebrity IS the paparazzi.

Once upon a time, for eight days in 2007, the news agency Associated Press decided to not cover anything on Paris Hilton, the socialite who in those days was famous for a sex tape, a reality show, and drunken charades at nightclubs.

“It wasn’t based on a view of what the public should be focusing on…editors just wanted to see what would happen if we didn’t cover this media phenomenon, this creature of the Internet gossip age, for a full week, ” AP had said at the time.

This was the pre-social media era. Is it even possible today?

Today, it would be derided as ‘cancel culture.’

But the Paris Hilton ‘media boycott’ was an attempt at the time to deliberately forget a celebrity who didn't add value to anything, except for herself.

In picture: US socialite Paris Hilton attends the 6th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills, California

Perhaps it worked. Paris was not mainstream for quite some time, briefly reappearing in 2020 as the protagonist of a documentary about reform school abuse. That has not however re-instated her anywhere near the celebrity ‘royal’ status she once had, though there is still a very strong fandom behind her.

Today, nobody is doing an AP on any celebrity, Priyanka or the Kardashians. The latter at one point in time were famous for being famous. It's a different matter that, over the years, through their reality series and individual business empires, the Kardashians are far more accomplished now.

And Kim Karadashian continues to cynically milk her ‘sex tape’ controversy, that she herself admits had helped her fame.

In picture: Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian and Kris Jenner can be seen with the rest of their family members

So let's get back to the moot question? Why are we so obsessed? Who is to blame?

It's the dog that eats its own tail. People search celebrity news on Google, and Google makes that the trend, and the trend compels news organisations to cover more of the trending person.

It's a vicious circle.

Till the tech giants that control the content flows into our news feeds and minds decide to tweak their algorithms to 'cancel' the celebrity or leader, just like they did for much of the Trump family, this drivel will continue.

Till that happens, your news feed will continue to be flooded with more Priyanka - Jonas happy pictures.

All the PR drivel that was supposed to lead up to that momentous occasion went down the drain, and there was radio silence from Will after the fateful Oscar night. Celebrity news is sawdust, not stardust This is the context in which I wrote the first line of this piece. Virality: Celebrity is the paparazzi Celebrities treating media like their poodles, thinking every action of theirs will be lapped up by the paparazzi, is nothing new. Today, it would be derided as ‘cancel culture.’ But the Paris Hilton ‘media boycott’ was an attempt at the time to deliberately forget a celebrity who didn't add value to anything, except for herself. In picture: US socialite Paris Hilton attends the 6th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills, California Perhaps it worked. In picture: Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian and Kris Jenner can be seen with the rest of their family members So let's get back to the moot question? Why are we so obsessed? Who is to blame? It's the dog that eats its own tail. People search celebrity news on Google, and Google makes that the trend, and the trend compels news organisations to cover more of the trending person. It's a vicious circle. Till the tech giants that control the content flows into our news feeds and minds decide to tweak their algorithms to 'cancel' the celebrity or leader, just like they did for much of the Trump family, this drivel will continue. Till that happens, your news feed will continue to be flooded with more Priyanka - Jonas happy pictures. (Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Academy bans Will Smith from the Oscars for 10 years for slapping Chris Rock

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has moved up its meeting to discuss possible sanctions against best actor winner Will Smith for slapping presenter Chris Rock to Friday, a letter from the group's president said.

The board of governors of the organization, the group that hands out the Academy Awards, previously had been scheduled on April 18 to discuss the incident at last month's Oscars ceremony.

Smith resigned from the academy on Friday and said he would accept whatever consequences the group decided were appropriate.

Because Smith resigned, the academy no longer needs to follow the legally prescribed timetable to consider the matter, academy President David Rubin said in a letter to members.

"It is in the best interest of all involved for this to be handled in a timely fashion," Rubin said.

Possible actions could include making Smith ineligible for future awards or banning him from future Oscars ceremonies.

At the March 27 televised event, Smith strode up to the stage after comedian Rock made a joke about the appearance of Smith`s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, then smacked Rock across the face.

Less than an hour later, Smith gave a tearful speech on stage as he accepted the best actor award for his role in 'King Richard.' After the ceremony, he was seen dancing at Vanity Fair's annual post-Oscars party.

Rock's joke about Smith`s spouse made a reference to the 1997 film 'G.I. Jane' in which actress Demi Moore shaved her head. It was unclear whether Rock was aware that Jada Pinkett Smith has a condition that causes hair loss.

Actor-comedian Whoopi Goldberg opened up about Will Smith and Chris Rock's altercation, which took place during Oscars 2022.

Goldberg believes that Smith will bounce back from the recent controversy surrounding him.Goldberg spoke about the slap controversy and its impact on Smith's career during Monday's episode of 'The View', reported Variety.

She predicted that Smith's career will go back to normal after he slapped Rock at last weekend's 94th Academy Awards -- comparing him to Louis C.K. and Kanye West being honoured at Sunday's 64th Grammy Awards.

"Some people found that controversial, but the show didn`t have anything like last week`s controversy, which is fine," Goldberg said.

"Also some of Will Smith's future projects are in question. The question is, does he have a path back? Yes, of course, he does. ... He`ll be fine, he`ll be back. No worries," she added.

Her comments come after some projects that Smith was previously attached to have been shelved by Netflix and Sony, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Goldberg's 'The View' co-host Ana Navarro argued in favour of Smith's comeback, saying she did not agree with Netflix`s choice to drop its planned Smith-starring project.

"He's had over 30 years of a career, where he's had a very positive image, been a positive role model, he`s been very philanthropic, he's done all sorts of things," Navarro said.

Navarro added, "None of us should be judged by our worst moment. We should be judged by our entire career. And yes, this is going to be with him the rest of his life. It`s going to be in his obituary. This is not going away. But should it define his life? Should it define his career? No, absolutely not. So I think Netflix and all those are making a mistake, and I hope they reconsider because we should be able to separate his art from what he did."Goldberg previously acknowledged that Rock "was the victim" but argued that the Oscars producers "made the right decision" in not removing Smith from the show.

"This is not the first time craziness has happened onstage, but this is the first time we`ve seen anybody assault anybody onstage," she said last week.

The conflict arose after Rock, who was presenting the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, seized the moment to crack a few jokes, including one about Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith`s shaved head. He compared the 50-year-old actor's appearance to that of Demi Moore`s look in 'G.I. Jane'.

It seems Will Smith's troubles are far from over. The actor may have apologised and subsequently resigned from the Academy after slapping Chris Rock at 2022 Oscar Awards, but it also has impacted the projects he has been associated with.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, OTT giant Netflix has planned to move 'Fast and Lose' into the backburner. The film features Will Smith in the lead. Incidentally, the film's director David Leitch had already left the project a week prior to the Oscars incident. He is now directing 'Fall Guy' which stars Ryan Gosling and is backed by Universal. Will Smith resigns from Academy membership after slapping Chris Rock at Oscars 2022
Soon after Leitch's exit, Netflix was even trying to rope another big director considering Smith was the front runner for Best Actor Oscar award this year.
