CWC 2023: Sachin Tendulkar heaps praise on Virat Kohli-KL Rahul, points out where Australia went wrong

<p>Team India opened their campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023 with a comfortable six-wicket win over Pat Cummins-led Australia in match 5 on Sunday (October 8) in Chennai. Being asked to bowl first&nbsp;at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. bundled out the Aussies for a paltry 199 in 49.3 overs with Ravindra Jadeja taking a three-fer whereas Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah returned with two wickets each. In reply, India were tottering at 2 for 3 before Virat Kohli's 85 and KL Rahul's unbeaten 97* took India home with 52 balls to spare.</p>

<p>After the match, Kohli received the best fielder of the match award in the team presentation in the dressing room. Kohli was proactive as ever in the field and accounted for two catches, removing Mitchell Marsh and Adam Zampa. Thus, the&nbsp;fielding coach T Dilip handed over the medal and revealed, in a BCCI video shared on all social media platforms, that the team management had been trying for a while to arrange laurels for fielding efforts. In addition, Dilip lauded Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan for their overall fielding efforts.</p>

<p>That dropped catch, however, proved too costly for Australia, as Virat went on to score 85, adding 165 runs with KL Rahul for the fourth wicket. As a result, India walked away with a six-wicket win in their CWC 2023 opener.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking on the repercussions of that particular dropped catch, Josh Hazlewood, who picked two wickets in his first over, defended Marsh, saying Alex Carey running in towards him caught him off-guard, resulting in putting it down.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In hindsight, had that catch been taken, India would have been 20 for four, with chase master Kohli back in the pavilion.&nbsp;</p>

Australia had a chance to get Kohli out when he top edged a bouncer from Josh Hazlewood in the eighth over of the innings but Mitchell Marsh couldn't hold on to it.</p>

<p>"The king of chase, they put him down at 12 and he went on to score 80 (85) runs. You can't do that if you want to win games against good teams," said Whatmore.</p>

<p>The former Australia cricketer, however, also said that Australia's didn't score enough runs first up despite starting off well.</p>

<p>David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (43) had added 69 runs for the second wicket after Mitchell Marsh was sent back for a duck early on. Kuldeep Yadav broke the Smith-Warner stand before Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets to leave Australia reeling five down for 119 in 30 overs.</p>

<p>Jadeja dismissed Smith with a peach before sending back Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey in the same over.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India, however, didn't start well either while chasing a modest 200 as they lost three quick wickets in Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Yes, he could have stayed on for another over or two but that's academic," said Whatmore when asked if Mitchell Starc could have stayed on another a bit longer. Starc bowled three overs in his first spell and took the wicket of Kishan.</p>

<p>Watmore also said that the India batsmen should take more time before playing shots as Kishan and Iyer did, resulting in their dismissal.</p>

<p>"Take a bit of time. All three of them were rushing (to play shots). May be not Rohit so much as he got a good ball but Iyer and Kishan played not very good shots," added the former Aussie.</p>

<p>With the win, India got much needed two points to start their 2023 World Cup campaign with a win. They next play Afghanistan on October 11 in New Delhi before taking on arch-rivals Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;</p>

While Jarvo 69 talked to Kohli, the security personnel arrived and escorted him out of the ground. BCCI is yet to release any statement regarding his fate.&nbsp;</p>

In the pictures that have since gone viral on social media platforms, Kohli could be seen seemingly exasperated at the audacity of the pitch invader. While Jarvo 69 talked to Kohli, the security personnel arrived and escorted him out of the ground. BCCI is yet to release any statement regarding his fate. <p>Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly as he sent back Australia opener Mitchell Marsh back for a duck in India's opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023 in Chennai on Sunday (October 8). Former India skipper Virat Kohli also played his part as he took a brilliant catch in the slips to support the bowler.</p>

<p>Indian seamers, Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, had started well by keeping the lines tight and not giving any room to the Aussie batters to free their arm. In the third over of the innings Bumrah came on to bowl to Marsh and sent a length ball outside off. The Aussie batter edged it to the slips while trying to defend and Kohli did rest of the work. <p>The UIM E1 World Championship is the latest entry into the environmentally responsible motorsports competition, joining Formula E and off-road Extreme E, and is scheduled to begin racing next year in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.</p>

<p>Kohli, widely regarded as one of the game's best batsmen, and sports tech entrepreneur Adi K Mishra will be principals at the helm of "The Blue Rising" team in the competition which is the brainchild of Formula E and Extreme E founder Alejandro Agag.</p>

<p>"I want to inspire people to have a competitive spirit and to raise awareness about sustainability issues, something I am becoming more and more passionate about as we build a family," Kohli, 34, said in a statement.</p>

<p>“Those angry celebrations are a thing of the past,” Kohli told ICC ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup. “I have had many suggestions, lots of advice has come my way; people were telling me I was doing this wrong, that wrong.”</p>

<p>Kohli also explained what helped him get back to&nbsp;form after a slump: “I picked out all the videos from the best time I had, same initial movement, same approach towards the ball and it was just what was happening inside my head, I wasn’t able to explain it to anyone.”</p>

<p>Every since the century against Afghanistan, Kohli has scored 1887 runs at an average of 55.57 in 40 games across formats that also includes seven centuries.</p>

<p>Notably, Kohli is also one of the two players to feature in both 2011 and 2023 squad with the other being Ravichandran Ashwin who made a dramatic comeback to the squad at the last moment.</p>
